Evening people,

my car (97 Marea 20v 87000 miles) has developed a really high pitched squeal from the font two wheels when driving along, usually after 15 mins. it temporarily disappears when going round corners ie turning wheels away from dead centre and when braking.

i have copper greased the back of the pads to no avail, therefore are the front bearings knackered?? (Have done a post search and this seems the other solution)

mot due in a couple of weeks so will get them changed then.

cheers

It could be your brake pads, especially if they are new.
If the pads are too hard they can cause squealing, they touch the disc during driving and produce a sound like that.
When you go in a turn, they unlock a bit and stop touching the disc, or when you brake they lock the disc and stop making noise.
If the bearing is gone, you should hear grinding noises.

You could try taking the pads out and givind the calipers a really good clean up to make sure the pads fit and can move back freely
Try a bit of copper slip on the edge the pad sits on to aid it's return to off possition.
Also try taking the shine off the face of the pad (temp fix new pads might be better as you'll have them out anyway.)

Thanks for the replies

had new disks & pads fitted about 8 months ago and this has only recently jusk started, so maybe they have become glazed etc, so will try giving them the once over with some sandpaper.

had taken them out yestarday and given them a good clean, removed dust and rust then coppergreased them but to no avail.

Failing giving them a rub over i might try some new pads to see what happens.

if i fix it will put a reply

cheers

What brand pads were used?

The old coppaslip on the back of the pad thing really does not apply to modern pads. Most have a backing pad that performs the job of the coppaslip far more effectively.

think you are maybe looking at the wrong fault.
does the noise raise and lower with the gear changes or keep going up with the speed.
if the pads were noisy going round corners would do nothing. diff? gearbox?

its not a belt kinda squel is it?
power steering belt, fanbelt?

no its definatly brakes as is a an amazingly high pitched metalic squeal that stops rounds left hand corners and when the brakes are applied, even with only with the lightest of touches and it is a constant noise wether 20,30 or 60 mph.

To Tom, sorry but i dont know just had the garage put them on, will try a new set from halfords tonight to see what happens, unless someone can recommend a set?

i am quite light with my braking (read the road far inadvanced and adjust my speed with engine braking and changing gear, habit from my TLR days) so they maybe glazed.

cheers

guys

still not convinced - but go for a drive and pull a few emergency stops and see if the noise stops for a bit. at the end of the drive do the front wheels feel excessively hot?
