Hi my 1.7TD when cold squeaks a bit when cold. When running for about 1-2 mins it seems to ease off , but when ran driving for a bit it is just a small squeaky noise on tick over. Could this be the water pump on it's way out? I don't think its the fan belt personally but possible.
Is the water pump easy to change as I cant find it in the haynes manual?
Thanks.
Stu. (y)

P.s You know that noise you hear sometimes when a car is going passed whining/squeaking sometimes?

Just been through the same thing with my new (to me) 1999 TD.
Wasn’t too concerned about it when I bought the car thinking it was just a loose belt or tensioner. Having been doing some reading on here though it seems a common problem.
Last Saturday had been messing about with the wiper motor, changed fuel filter and a few other jobs. Went to restart it (took a while to bleed the air from fuel system).
Luckily the bonnet was up because the alternator caught fire!
What a beast of a job getting that out was.
On closer inspection once removed the alt bearings were completely shot, the extra charging load on the somewhat drained batter was enough to make it Kiel over.

Just waiting for the new one to arrive today (cheapest was £90 delivered from a specialist in Plymouth), will update as to whether the squeal has gone just as soon as it’s all put back together.

All I can say about yours Stu is if it was solely belt slip it would increase with revs, mine disappeared after 1 min or less at anything above tickover.

Wish I could afford to replace the water pump as had to split the seal to remove the bracket that obstructed the alt from coming out, but guess this will prove one way or another if the noise was the alt.

Reporting back,
Just got the new alternator on and new alt belt + PS pump belt.
(the belts were good but thought it wise to replace whilst it was all stripped)

The squeal is gone!

On reflection a pain of a job and expensive, £90 Alternator, £15 new belts. But was a good opportunity for a full service.
(highest price for the alt online was £190, and 2 local factors quoted me £140 & £160 so well worth finding the cheapest)
It’ll also bring peace of mind, would rather it had happened outside a mates house than half way between Scotland & Cornwall in the small hours of a morning.

The helpful people at the alternator supply company told me they keep a lot of them in stock as they sell huge amounts of them so maybe this is more common a problem than water or power steering pump?

The starter motor & alternator company,

startermotor-alternator.co.uk

Who have an ebay shop

ebay username
thestartermotoralternatorco.ltd

(sorry i cant post live links until have made 5 posts apparently)

Cant recommend them highly enough, ID’d the dead alt from photos and got right back to me, arrived in less than 24 hrs.
