Technical Speedo woes

No not the swimming variety...

The speedo on my 2001 Bug has started to intermittently cut out during trips. It was initially once in a while and then nothing for several weeks, however, now it is happening several times in a short trip.

I do not know if this is as a result of a fauly sensor or speedometer and, would welcome some advise on how to verify the problem without having to take it into a garage for a costly repair. I have looked under the car and nothing obvious is loose, but do not really know what the sensor looks like or where it is located anyway.

Currently, we are resorting to using a sat nav when this happens, but its a pain having to keep removing and reinstalling it in the car as we are paronoid about leaving it in the car for obvious reasons.

I would suggest that the problem lies in an intermittant connexion between the sensor and the speedo head.

The sensor is located as per the diagram ->

The sensor itself is an Hall effect transistor and it's doubtful it would be intermittant although the plug/socket could well be.
