took my documents to the police station today, how much of a criminal did i feel???

especially surrounded by the 16 year olds, "have you been arrested before son?" "yeah loads of times innit"

hmmm

Josh, it would leave you in the same situation as me, about 40 notes down, probably more than that now.

I was told it came under abandoning the vehicle, although I was about 1.5 meters away from it max, the width of a footpath.

This country sucks. I daren't say that's all I've got to say, because it's not. I should really write to Network54 and ask them what their physical Database limits are.

I say, shaft the police too (for motoring offences)

How is it possible to get 64MPG yet speed everywhere? imboseals I swear.

And I swear that gun is not accurate.

I even rang Telespeed UK to confirm the number of the certificate against the serial number on a gun, but she asked me who I was and I said I was a general member of the public so she couldn't release that data.

I rang up later and said it was Mr XXX calling from Trading Standards and was wondering could you do a check for me?

She obliged and unfortunately the serial and cert. number were infact correct.

Worth a try though.

the only way i think the speed gun could be fiddled by the officer would be for him to clock one car that is speeding then just not wipe the speed off the gun, then stop any car that looks like it is going too quick and show them that reading.

I honestly don't believe they do that though!

I wouldn't mind if they told me actually how fast I was allegedly going...

But they won't.

So I'm taking them to court :)

speeding

I have a nephew who was caught by the camera going over the limit. 35 in a 30 zone. Any way he duly got notice through the post requesting the fine and to send his licence to be stamped. However ,They had spelled his name wrong so he went to court. When he was called they asked him his name, He pointed out the mistake. Case dismissed

"The police are part of the problem not the solution. I advocate better driver self discipline to comply with the law then we wouldn't need them as they are jobs worth gits who apply the law as it suits them."

I hate rising to these sorts of comments but i feel it must be said that very often the police enforce the law to the other persons benefit. You really want cops enforcing everything to the letter of the law all the time? You want people being arrested for not producing their documents at teh roadside or even for dropping litter because it can be done in some circumstances (i.e. if name and address can not be verified)like it or not speeding and a lot of other motoring offences lead to injuries and fatalities on this countrys roads and in one respect your right If people had better self discipline and stayed within the law the whole time the police wouldnt need to police the roads and would be able to spend their time policing all the other stuff that todays modern society presents. All i would say is when you are crashed into by someone with no insurance who then drives off, or the **** hits the fan in some other way nine times out of 10 the Police are the first people you want to see there.

"Any situation which requires hard work or brain power and they are left totally flummoxed."

I beg to differ here. Can you recall from memory probably 100 different bits of legislation on the spot at four in the morning. Becasue I know police officers can, and they have to. As for hard work i don't know many other professsions that could involve working for over 12 hours with no break and having people swear, spit, and punch at you for no reason (other than the NHS) and have to make massive decisions that have a bearing on the futures of everyone involved where there is no 100% right answer. To see people who have lay dead for months or hold back screaming relatives at the scene of an accident as their loved one dies before you is definatley not an easy thing to do. I'm not denying the fact that there are bad officers out there but like i said the police are generally the first people you wnat coming through the door when things really go sideways. To say they are all bad would be like saying all young drivers are boy racers... and that wouldnt be fair now would it?

As for the original offence this thread was talking about i think it's proper title is vehicle abandonment, however it is known more commonly as Quitting. Its generally meant to cover instances where people leave the engine running when they dash in for a paper etc, but it is an offence, which these days you can be arrested for. Under the serious and organised Crime and Policing Act all offences are now arrestable by the police (even as trivial as littering etc) if certain criteria are met such as the persons name or address can not be verified at the scene, for example if the person has no ID on them whatsoever and there name isnt listed to the address they have given. Normally for quitting you are offerred a 30 pound fixed penalty ticket (more in london). A lot of people don't seem to know that you can not be GIVEN a penalty ticket by the police only OFFERED one. The alternative is to be summonsed for the offence and go to court for it. But it is always your choice.

As far as speed guns not being accurate. They are tested and calibrated before each time they are used by a trained officer. Who is a recognised court expert on the device so in court if they say it was corretly calibrated and that was the speed to showed you doing that is fact, because its come from an expert witness.

What should happend with these devices is once it captures the speed of a vehicle it holds the reading on the screen. The device can not read another speed until this is cleared. What should happen is when you are stopped you should told what speed the gun has clocked you at and be offered the oppourtunity to view the read out on the gun before anything else happens. Each reading taken by the gun is stored in its memory and dowloaded later. (This is also the case with roadside breathtest devices)

Cheers for the advice of "quitting" i'll keep that in mind next time.
Just a quick note did anyone see in the paper the copper that got caught doing 124mph on the dual carriage way then 91 through a 30 limit. He's reasons for this was to get a driver who he thought was over the limit back to the station quickly.
Trust me in no way do i condone drunk driving i've known several people killed or seriously injured through it including myself. But can you justify these speeds esp with a member of the public in the cop car.
He was quoted saying that he was a fully qualified driver with adquate training to drive at these speeds. Does that mean any racing driver/personal protection driver etc etc can drive like a tw*t because he is trained to.
Noone and i mean noone can control a car with a blow out/ hitting an animal someone pulling out at these speeds.

sorry for my rant but i think its very difficxult for people to trust the law when you have blatant abuse of it by themselves.

Don't get me wrong i'm very lucky where i live most of the police are very decent, will talk to you rather than just slapping you with a fine, as long as you don't give them a mouthful.

yes, if someone hits you who is not insured you want the police there, however unless someone is injured they will not come. I would recommend faking an injury in this case to get the police to the scene as if you do not call them to the scene they will refuse to help you at a later date when you try to get money out of the uninsured driver. If the police refuse to get involved then you can onlt go to small claims court, if the uninsured driver just decides not to turn up the most that can happen is a CCJ against them!

And the thread was started with me being a naughty boy not vehicles being left by the road, pay attention to me god damb it!!! lol

sorry mate, just linked it with how petty police can be since you'd only just passed the new lower limit.
Will pay attention next time, will now go and stand in the corner and face the wall for 30 minutes.

"yes, if someone hits you who is not insured you want the police there, however unless someone is injured they will not come."

Thats sort of accurate. As I understand it the police will not attend RTCs whereby both drivers are happy they have all the other parites details. if one of the persons involved doesnt think the other person has given them all the details then call the rozzers and they should come out. If the other person leaves the scene before police attend they they have technically failed to remain at the scene to properly exchange details, which is an offence. The law states you only need to give your insurance details where there has been injury caused. where there is no injury you only have to give your name and address.

As for the police refusing to get involved. If there is a suggestion that the other car involved is/was uninsured at the time they they really are duty bound to get involved since you are reporting a crime which the police would have a duty to investigate. Truth is tho they may want to fob you off due to the low likleyhood of catchin anyone for it (if they have no insurance how likley is it they have told the DVLA they are the new keeper, or even given you the right details?)

It is a bit of a bastard where they chose to clock your speed, but i usppose if you think about it from there point of view its a prime spot to catch likley speeders and as far as the law is concerned your speeding whether you two feet into the new limit or two miles. I suppose they need to pick a spot where they are most likley to get the highest number of speeders possible to warrant having chose the site in the first place. they may even been acting on complaints from residents on that part of the road and you can hardly blame the fuzz for that!

Paying any kind of fine for anything is always a total pain in the backside tho!

In reference to the story about the bobby who drove at silly speeds to get a drink driver back to the station I haven't heard such a daft excuse for speeding in my life and totally agree its reckless to drive that way if its not neccesary. It may even be better to driver slowly tot he station since the level of alcohol in his blood may still be on the rise at this stage, depending on when he last drunk. Police drivers should only exceed the speed limit when responding to an immediate grade call, or when in a pursuit situation and should only do so as long as it reamains as safe as they can allow. Normal police drivers can only go over the limit by 10-15mph only advanced grade drivers can go faster than this. 160mph on a 40mph dual carriage way is totally possible for them. I'm not denying that at those speeds accidents can happen, but this is why advanced police drivers have to go through such a massivley stringent course and test before being granted the grade. The difference between police advanced drivers and the afore mentioned racing driver etc is of course they are driving in a marked police vehilce with all the blue lights and sirens, when the other goups wouldnt be. I'm not excusing reckless driving by police officers but im just trying to explain that what some advanced police drivers can do and the skill they can drive a vehicle really is of the highest quality (on the whole)

I've seen driving by so called advanced traffic police and it is diabolical. The police are generally a PITA and watste of time. Just sort a problem out yourself. If you don't get sufficient redress legally then you can always sort some one out later. I wouldn't dream of calling the plods now. Twice I've done so and their responses have been franky pathetic just idiots. what's currently surfacing with the Stephen Lawrence case is the tip of the iceberg. There was that prog on Leics police which showed them in their true light all taking the **** and not doing what they should be doing like like taking offences seriously and preventing or stopping criminals.

Ever thought of being a politician ?

They're full of **** too :)

Unfortunately Rob, he is not...

Police are all too willing clamp down on those who pay their taxes and insure their cars. Also, anyone who has a firearm cannot so much as even fart out of place before they will attempt to revoke your license-purely because its easy to do, almost all involved are law abiding citizens, but it makes the police look like they are catching real 'criminals'.

Yet, when a pikey is involved they are all eating pie's or they're suddenly closed. They are ******S. I just hope you dont get hit by an uninsured driver to see just quite how useless they are.

Oh Gawd! and here i was about to commend everyone on a speeding thread that hadn't degenerated into a slanging match, and made nearly 40 posts (so far)

oh well. I guess its a universal concept after all. E=MC squared has nothing on
forum member + speeding ticket = a repetitive soporific argument.

i'm taking bets on how high the post count will get before a lock appears.
i'm taking 47 :D
