Speed Limits on motorways to be raised to 80mph by the end of this year!

"Britains top speed limit is to go up to 80mph on the motorways by the end of the year.

Transport secretary Alistair Darling has taken the controversial decision to raise the 70mph limit because experts say modern cars can safely handle it.

But in return motorways will have 'variable' speeds in bad weather or heavy traffic with motorists limited to 60mph.

In urban areas the 30mph limit may be raised to 40mph late at night and at weekends where there is less traffic and fewer pedestrians."

I think they have been reading this forum and taken our suggestions

If we could only get the Swedish banking system here as well. Transferred funds that clear in an hour.

To think that the city of London is considered the financial centre of Europe and yet the antiquated clearing system is still in use.

It's about time they recognised how far brake engineering has come in the last 50 years!
Besides also the fact that cars handle so much better (and they need to as cars are twice the size they used to be - and they just keep getting bigger!).

They already make allowances for weather though. A traffic cop is not likely to pull you at less than 90 (on the motorway) on a dry clear day, whereas if you are doing in excess of 70 when it's pissing down and visibility is reduced, then expect to get get pulled.

Whether 30 is the right speed or not, I'm not certain I agree in principle with the argument of raising the speed limit in 30 zones during late times.

i've heard that they plan to be more tight on speeding though - as in they literally won't entertain anything at all over 80mph from then on, so you could get done for speeding for doing 85mph - even though it's only 5mph over the limit!

As long as they also go after people who drive too slowly on motorways.

Very similar to Nige's annoyance...I was driving home on Saturday on a motorway, but the motorway was only two lanes at this point.

There was a guy sat in the outer of the two lanes doing 45-50mph (normal 70mph speed limit). I sat behind him for about 0.5 mile, he just sat there, after a while i flashed my lights in case he hadnt seen me...still sat there.

After about another 0.5 mile, i though sod it, nipped into the inside lane and slowly undertook him. As i did this he was shaking his arm at me and you could see he was swearing...lol

I just could not believe this guy, when i was behind him i was in no rush so i was sitting back from him a bit, so i could no reason for him to be pissed off.

So i did the only sensible thing, i pulled out into the outside lane and sat there at about 40mph, i only sat there for about 15-20 seconds, then flaashed the bird and sped off...(shouldnt have done that i know, but this guy was a knob...lol)

the clearing system we have here is set up that way to make banks money. while its not in your account, or the receivers account, its invested in the overnight money markets, making the banks money. They do this so they can offer what they call 'free' banking, ie no transaction charges. you'll find in sweden theres a price list for all transactions. its cheap mind you, and fast, so its well worth converting to that system methinks

i cant see them raising 30 mph zones to 40, due to the adverts ya see on TV, if a child is hit a 30 they have a better % of surviving that if hit at 40mph,

my solution....KIDS.....STAY OF THE BLOODY ROADS WITH YOUR BALLS AND USE GRASSY AREAS!!

CHAVS......stop walking as slow as you possible can crossing main roads to act "hard" cos one day im a gunna sweve for ya!

Trick with chavs that walk slowly is to go nuts with your horn. Makes them jump and everyone looks as if they done summat - bring unwanted attention and makes them look less 'cool'.
