well as the title would suggest, our little 1.2 stilo previously owned by my old der - who buckled the passengers side front wheel and knackering the wishbone in the process! Has just been sorted out before we got the car off her. Now we also thought the wheel bearing was gone to due to the "werrrrrrrrrr'ing" but the mechanic who sorted it out asured us that it was only the above - wishbone and alloy! also then MOT'd, last month was asked to check out and reported all was fine!

But, to be fair the "werrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr'ing" isn't that loud anymore but its still there :bang: any ideas what it could be coming from the passenger front wheel area?

tried the old driving in a circle on full lock and all is fine? just dont know were to start now!

I'd go down a hill and weave a little from side to side. If the noise increases and decreases then it's wheel bearing. If the noise is constant and just gets louder the faster you go then unfortunately it could well be transmission ie diff bearings and the collision could be a reason why

hi decks

the car wasnt in a collision, she went through a pot hole! - no joke!

Hmmm... the sound did get louder when we was going faster, was loudest at 40/50mph and increased and decreased with speed! Also felt slight vibrations when go faster!

Just having a look, wheel bearing arent to bad bout £40 for the 1.2? tried to have a look on eper to see more about the diff bearings but wont let me connect for some reason!

Dont know if you could post up pictures so know what im looking for... did they list prices on eper too?

cheers pal

Ah yes, we have potholes around here like that too

Could still be wheel bearings. Hope so, as diff bearings mean new diff required.

It's difficult to pinpoint the source of the noise on the front as it's all turning around, the diff and the wheel bearings, at the same time. If the wheel bearings are really bad then just spinning the wheel with it off the ground will tell you. But diff bearings sound very similar and give a low grumbling noise increasing with speed too

It's possible the front hub bearings were damaged on removing for the other stuff to be replaced or perhaps the bearing overtightened afterwards

What about dried out bearing? I've had this twice on previous cars. It could easily be felt when jacking up the car and spinning the wheel by hand. Jack up both sides, set in free (or neutral or whatever you call it...), and roll the wheel. Does the other one turn the opposite direction, or is it stuck there? If stuck, the bearing might be dried out, or too tight as mentioned.

i had this. wheel bearings were fine and i had troubles with diffs when in warranty. I jacked the car up so both wheels were in the air and started it and put it in gear. opened the bonnet and the whirring was coming from gearbox area.

i solved this by trading in the car.

if you check it like this remember to turn off the ASR and the ABS errors you get will go away after 5 minutes of normal driving (ie with wheels not in the air!)

I went through this trying to find out what was happening to my JTD, the result was one wheel bearing and an inner driveshaft cracked race. The other symptoms I had was a vibration felt through the throttle peddle.
Hope this is of some help.

Hi All
The best way I have found to track down a dodgy wheel bearing is on long sweeping bends, if it gets louder on a bend and quietens on the straight it’s almost certainly a wheel bearing, you need to try right and left bends.
It’s hard to tell by spinning it on the jack unless you know what it sounds like, the drag on the brakes can easily be interpreted as bearing noise.
I found the diff bearing usually grumbles irrespective of bends once hot, it also makes a different noise when you come off the throttle and just coast.
I would also get the rears checked bearing noise can be very deceiving.
Good Luck.
