Hi all I have just brought a 1.9jtd stilo on a 03 plate even when I have drove for a hour the temperature gauge hardly moves think it's the thermostat and when I'm driving and go over 3k the EML comes on and it goes in to safe mode and the car just doesn't feel like it goes like it should takes ages to get to 60 mph and its using a hell of a lot off fule and comments are welcome because I don't have a clue thanks ?

Quite likely to be the thermostat stuck open, so not getting hot enough. A cold engine is fed more fuel, but after time it will object and this is what is probably responsible for the EML on and limp mode. It will be overfuelling all the time, so consumption will be poor.

With bonnet open, locate the top hose from engine to radiator. From cold, start engine and frequently touch top hose to feel temp. Careful not to get near moving parts, including radiator fan, or too close to hot exhaust.
Top hose should stay cool, get gently warm just by conduction of heat, then when stat opens it gets hot suddenly. A stuck open stat will allow the top hose to warm gently, but never get hot.
Report back.

Proper place for this would be in the Stilo section. If not diagnosed, re-post in Stilo with findings from this.

Hi. Does sound like the thermostat is a strong possibility..
try the heater..does it take ages to get heat?
