Technical Something else now....

Just been looking around the forum about problems similar to mine. The anti roll bar bushes are mentioned but i hope its not that, it sounds expensive :(

Phil

Its the cheapest thing possible, only about £10-£15 a side for the part iirc and half hour to fit (can probably do it yourself as its a DIY job).

Oh right! From what i read the bushes cannot be brought seperately instead the whole bar needs to be purchased (around £100?).

Phil

No no, well yes, but no.....

Let me explain.

Basically its normally the drop links, this is a slim bar which runs from the end of the anti roll bar to an upper section of the suspension let each side.

This has a bush at each end, and most of the time it is these which fail, and are about £10 - £15 a side, and simply a bolt on bolt off replacement job :)

The bushes under the car which hold the antiroll bar in place are the expensive ones, but these don't often fail (although its not impossible).

What you may have seen though, which is slightly more common, but normally once done shouldn't reoccur, is the rear axel bushes, which is a pig of a job, but not impossible, and will be a job you'll get very different prices for depending upon if the garage you approach wants the hassle or not.

Rightio! So these drop links are at the front, but when they fail it can sound like the knocking is from the rear? Its getting worse now.

I had the rear axel bushes replaced in February, purchased from Shop4parts.

I had the same problem, klonking over bumps, driving me nuts as was unsure where it was coming from front or back, thought it might have been the dreaded rear suspension bushes, but it turned out to be the front anti roll bar link. £12.00 sorted, totally transformed the car:)

:yeahthat:
found myself in same situation sounded like knocks where coming from rear end and worried it be the rear bushes and when jacked front wheels up and gave drop links a good tug nearside had a good amount of play,, changed both sides and been knock free since and no advisories at last mot..would certainly recommend looking at the drop links

Because they're great cars. Still miss mine :(

Definitely an under-rated model. I think of mine as a cheaper rendition of an Alfa 147, with a little more power, a little more practicality, and a little less mechanical complexity which counts in its favour as it ages. Electrical complexity is another matter but mine seems to be behaving so far.

As you know, I'm using my Stilo in place of a much more modern and much more expensive yet much more basic car (the 500 I bought and sold last year) :)

If we think working on Stilo suspension is annoying - try working on an Alfa Romeo 147/156/GT. Twice as many bits to replace and twice as many knuckles skinned :p I do miss my old 156 though - with Eibach/Koni suspension, it was a slightly keener drive than the Stilo.

This post subject is very useful! Now guess what my latest issue is.......passenger side rear caliper sticking. Well thats what i think it is, burning smell from that wheel. Am i unluckiest person with cars or do i own the worse Stilo in the world.Phil

There are a number of threads on the forum re: rear calipers . My experience is that the pads stick in the slides, and the handbrake cable becomes sticky in is sheath . Both items can be avoided by proper servicing, like lubricating the caliper slides and either lubricating or replacing the handbrake cables. My theory is that these areas are close to the silencer box and so the grease suffers from more heat on the passenger side. Caliper failure is not so common. (I got 160k from my stilo without replacing any caliper BUT detailed service -not skimpy fiat schedule service-was carried out over all of the 160K - and it was still running fine when I traded it in. )
There are recon and new calipers available on ebay at cheap prices if you do need them . The ones in a Fiat box are quite expensive .

if this is the case, the caliper has probably been sticking for a while, and is now worse. Get it check asap, because the worst case scenario is new caliper, pads and discs and possible handbrake cable....if you are lucky, a good garage will just strip and grease the caliper sliders, but if they cant get the sliders out forget it.

I had to have my drivers side done for MOT, new caliper was £80 but you can get then a lot cheaper I believe.

hmm...sounds about right, although I think there are TWO types of caliper for the Stilo. I checked this, its true, but my car needed the more expensive one. Cant remember the difference between the two, but the garage told me the Sporting models had a different rear caliper?!

Still, compared to my previous cars, £80 a caliper is way better than £130 a caliper...(y)

I can't see how, its the same car, one with a sporting badge and a bit of trim. Think they're having you on there, they've not got any special 'sports' power outputs or anything to require different brakes.
