Technical  Snapped rear spring cup.

After a disappointing but totally predictable 3-1 defeat to Oxford Utd last night, I’ve channeled my frustration on the Panda this morning.

It’s finally out and the risk it posed to anyone in it is quite sobering, bearing in mind it had a “no advisories” MOT six months ago 🙄 The rubber bushes are pretty KO’d too.

Hubs came off surprisingly easily despite the crud. I’ll buy new studs and nuts for those and probably for the beam to hinge plate.

I’m not touching the hubs at all, they will go back on as is.

It a proper work out!
Great job. As they say it was ripe for renovation!

I was saying to my Dad that when I did the rear subframe on my 1981 Mini waaay back in 1989, all the bits probably cost the same as this will cost and I didn’t bat an eyelid about doing it outside on a gravel drive.

This seemed like a no-brainer really but many would have just scrapped it.

Love it. That was a long time back. Similarly horrid jobs!

I was looking forward to a day in the garage tomorrow putting eth new beam together. I’ve got new brake hoses, pipes, brake fluid, getting new nuts and bolts…

Never thought to look at the state of the bleed nipples on the rear wheel cylinders. Tiny rusty little things. Absolutely no chance of using them. The look like they have put up a fight before. So, new cylinders needed. The trouble is, what sort? The car is a 2010 on a 60 plate and I seem to think there was a change in 2010 from one sort to another.

Any pointers and am I likely to find some in the Preston/Lancaster area tomorrow?

Brake cylinders sorted, rather frustratingly from a place virtually next door to where I work that I didn’t know was there.

Too late know

Here how to identify the brakes

Back on the road (sort of). There’s a clunk/knock coming from the left side over bumps, so!I’ve forgotten to do a final tighten up on something, although I don’t know what and the ABS light is on. I’ll check stuff tomorrow. I suspect I’ve damaged an ABS wire somehow.

Thanks to everyone for their help, sharing knowledge and support.

There’s a clunk/knock coming from the left side over bumps,
The new axle will likely have come with nylon bushes, it seems difficult to source anything else. These are noticeably harsher than the rubber OE bushes, which Fiat do not supply separately. They make much more noise over bumps. I replaced my axle a few years ago, and still hate the harshness.
As that side has the exhaust, check the mountings. They all have nylon straps to prevent total failure, and can look OK as a result. Just changed mine, one fell apart after removal, and noises are reduced.

It appears that rubber bushes may be available for the Ka2, from your Ford dealer.

I did read in an earlier reply that the new beam would be noisier. This is a definite clunk. If I rock the car side to side, it’s quiet, if I push down at the rear bumper, you can hear it. The handbrake is off. I didn’t touch the top shock bolts at all when I did the swap, and I torqued the bottom shock and beam to body bolts to 54-55ftlbs (I hope that’s about right).

I missed this too and I was following progress

Don drove to sixth form in Lancaster and I carried on to work this morning. Knock from the left has gone. There’s a less dramatic one on the right, so I’ll look at that tonight.

While I had the left hand cover off yesterday, I unplugged/plugged the ABS sensor wire and the light hasn’t come on this morning, which was nice.
