Re: why is george smoking lots??
This is just a quick update since the Ulysse stopped starting again about two weeks later. Needed quick start spray again first thing in the morning - even if the temp outside was quite warm (7 deg +). Exactly as it was when not all the glow plugs were working! I had no doubt that this was again the problem. I also knew that one plug was not new still. When I originally started the replacement job I only bought two, as I didn't know then if I could get to any of the plugs. As it happens I managed to get to the first three and one of them tested OK (2 ohm resistance). I suspected that this one, which I put back in, may now have gone like all the others. I quickly bought another new plug and replaced the old regardless of how it's resistance might be now.
Still wouldn't start! Fortunately (stubbornly) I was still convinced that the problem was in the plugs. Having just scrubbed my hands I had to get down to it again. Whipped the wires off the first three again and tested them all for resistance whilst they were still in the engine. Would you believe - the first new one I put in, was registering about 200 ohm. I was chuffed and amazed - there was still a glimmer of hope that I was right. I took it out and because I hadn't bought a replacement yet, I put the old working? plug (2 ohm resistance still) into this spot instead. Hey presto all 'sound as a pound' (guess we can't say that any more). It started immediately. The moral I suppose is to test new things, if possible, before incorporating them, as I guess that this new plug may have shown up as having unusually high resistance to start with.
Oh yea - water going down now - again. Pigs. Like having a blumin baby to look after. Hoping the K seal, still in the water, will re-do the job. Fingers crossed...as always!!
