General smashed windscreen

If you haven't already sorted it, talk to your local windscreen specialist. It is flat glass. They can cut a new one from their stock glass, like they do for tractors. Might be quite cheap.

Really? Tried to get a windscreen + fitment under my £80 windscreen insurance excess last weekend. Suggestions like this were met with dismay. Interested to hear peeps experiences though.

Yep this is exactly what I did when I smashed my windscreen - cost 70 quid to get one cut and fitted, all the correctly laminated glass is used by the aftermarket window companies aswell as mobile glass fitters. It'll be worth looking into, I got mine done by a company called Cab Glazing, based in Ripon.

is tractors glass safe glass or the old stuff like used in side windows that shatters in to loads of little squares?

They cut it from laminated glass sheets. Quite clever, they score the glass with a glass cutter, then pour a little meths into the crack, light it and this breaks the inner membrane and seals it. Quite a skill.

Cutting the toughened glass is very difficult because it is so highly stressed.

Interesting thanks (y)

Do you mean laminated glass is difficult to cut, or are you saying toughened glass is more difficult than laminated? with the last line as toughened is the stuff that breaks into millions of pieces?

Laminated glass is simple sheet glass, two sheets bonded together with a plastic membrane glueing them together. The glass is cut using normal glass cutting tools and generally does as it is told. Cutting and sealing the inner membrane is the really clever bit.

Toughened glass, is the stuff our side and rear windows are made of, which breaks into lots of little bits. Quite flexible and tough when you want to break it, but at the same time quite stressed. Catching an edge on a sharp object, or trying to stand the glass on a concrete floor can often have it burst. Scratch the surface with a diamond (e.g. engagement ring) and it will burst easily. For this reason, cutting it to different sizes is very difficult. I think it involves heating it to relieve some stress. It is normally moulded to the required size, rather than cut to size, but sometimes can be cut to size for van side windows, if flat.
