Laterly my uno turbo mk2 has been getting abit tappy, my oil level is always where it should be and oil gets changed every 3-4k. can mk2 tappets be adjusted? checked the cam for scores and seems smooth as a babys arse :/ any one got any ideas cheers.

The tappets are shims in buckets
NOT a simple spanner and screwdriver job
You need a special tool to depress the bucket, to them blow compressed air under the shim to pop it up and grab it to take it out
Then measure it with a micrometer to work out what size it is
and so what size it needs to be changed to . . . . .

Don't forget to measure the clearence of the shim to the cam before you take the shims out.

As per the two posts above the valve clearances can be adjusted, however, they use bucket and shims. This means that when set the clearances generally don't need adjusting for very long periods (on a well maintained engine), but when they do it requires more work than with screw and lock nut type adjustment.

First things first, to identify if it is indeed your tappets that need adjusting, check them all for clearances first. You can do this easily with a set of feeler gauges and a Haynes manual in about 20 minutes. Make a note of the clearances and their corresponding valves as you will need to calculate the shims needed if any need changing. If you do need to change them you MUST make sure you identify each shim and its corresponding valve as to calculate the new shim needed you need to know the measured clearance of the valve and its corresponding shim (you may need to measure the shim with a micrometer). Even from the factory not all shims will be the same size across all valves.

Good luck!

hi there mate mine does that it will get worse but i will say what it is but u wont like it

its the cam shaft mate my exhaust lobe on piston 4 has slightly worn down i had the shims changed a year ago it went quite then the tapping has come back i got myself a fast road cam to go in i have not driven it since it came back as metal could be floating around and i dont want it go in my nice new turbo

change your cam and reshim it

Well i hope its not.. its got a piper 270 fast road cam in it  i hope it ok and just worn shims *Pray*

na the whole engine was rebuilt with new shims and cam at the same time so which one would go first? :p

Hmmmmmm
I'd take the cam cover plate off and check the valve clearances to see if they are all out of tolerance or if it is just the odd one or too.
Also while you are doing this you could have a good look at the lobes of the cam and see if there is any visible wear/scoring of the surfaces on the cam

I'm guessing that the cam would wear before the tappet shims as the cam is the first thing to get starved of oil if you suffered oil pressure surging or oil starvation as the oil gets slooshed about and away from the pickup pipe in the sump when you throw the car round fast corners

But others with more knowledgeable of an U/T SOHC Lampredi motor with a hotter aftermarket cam fitted may have better knowledge of the likely causes
