One here for fiattech are the gearboxes in the 1.2 & 1.6 stilos remembering that 1.2 is 6spd and 1.6 is 5spd do they use the same box and if it was possible to fit 6 spd into 1.6 would there be any benefit from the transplant or
I remember replacing a 1.6 gearbox and it was very similar to the 5 speed out of a punto 1.2.
I would guess that you could put a 6 speed onto a 1.6, but would not know how gear engagement for 6 and reverse would work out - i reckon it would just be simply down from 5th.
Having another gear would give better economy but only really at motorway speeds.
Am not totally sure of the difference in ratio's between the 2 boxes or if the torque capability between 5 speed and 6 speed boxes differs.
6th drops rpm by around 500rpm, at 70mph your pulling just under 3000rpm, makes for more hushed progress and better acceleration, its an overdrive gear, so thats all its gonna do, not give you access to more performance...... all assuming it fitted/lined up and worked.
I'm not sure how it affects the Stilo, but 6th gear on my Punto Sporting is not an overdrive gear, the car continues to pull well in 6th and it is the gear at which maximum speed is achieved.
My 5th gear ratio is lower than the ratio of 5th on the standard Punto gearbox so I would presume that it is a gearbox designed for slightly quicker acceleration.
70mph is a needle's width off 3000rpm on my Sporting
Also, i remembered - on the 1.6 stilo the starter is on the front of the bell housing, on the 1.2/1.4 16v its on the back.
I dont think bell housings are changeable - so not possible I'm afraid, unless you get 2 boxes and try to swap bits and pieces over knowing that you could come out with nothing to show.
