he guys i was offered a swap my mk1 punto sporting 1.6 with 1 year mot and
6 months tax for a fiat coupe 20v turbo 45thou on the clock with no mot or tax all it needs are two tyres for the mot i know its worth more than the punto but is the fuel economy as bad as people say, should i do it or not any advice is appreciated thanks

45k is very low for a Coupe. I'd give it a damn good look over too before parting with your car. A load of reasons why no MOT and a lot of them terminal (ie you either won't get an MOT..bodged accident damage or ++£ to fix). How old is it?

as above have a good look, 45k sounds suspect as loads get clocked. have a look at the service history and at the car for signs of wear especially seats and pedals. Also for external stone chips etc.

Have a very thurough inspection of the car. knackered Turbo etc....
The guy should put some tyres on and have it mot'd. even if it costs you another £100 it is worrying that someone wants to sell such a car without an mot....

Regarding fuel economy. coupe is one of the best performance cars on mpg. Remember it is a 155mph car.
if you pootle around at 56mph then the coupe will not get near the punto on mpg. However my friend has a 1,2 grande punto and hammers it everywhere, at the same speeds my coupe is not even stretching its legs and thus returns a better mpg.

like all cars, fuel economy is variable, depending on how you drive it.

I've seen as much as 43mpg out of mine. I've also seen 8mpg

The main issue with a Coupe is the potential for large bills. Buy one with good history and you'll love it to bits. Buy one that needs work and you'll hate it.

A 20VT is NOT a car you can just own and lift the bonnet at service time. It needs constant preventative maintenance. However, they CAN be run on a budget (as long as you buy wisely).

They are stupidly cheap for a 150mph car, but beware, after a Punto, even a bad Coupe will feel quick.

There's a handful of VERY good Coupe specialists that can take a lot of the pain out of ownership

If the car is modded, be VERY careful - its spectacularly easy to get one to 260-270bhp, but after that, they need decent supporting mods to make them reliable.

Mine is now running over 400bhp and has recently passed 200,000 miles, so they can be good.

Buy with your head, not your heart and you should be OK. Plenty of owners on the Coupe forum will accompany you to view the car if you ask nicely and offer a beer or two
