I have owned my Bravo 1.8hlx for about 2 years now and I'm not to certain if I should keep the car or sell it and buy a HGT. When I bought the car it had 149500 on the clock and it was a 1997 on an R plate backed up with all its service history so I knew it was a good buy for the money. I dont mind the car but hate the fact that it is about as quick in first and secound as a snail that has been glued to the spot. it handles extremly well and in fact the only cars i can compare it to on that is my series 1 RS that had pro gas shocks and was dropped bout 40mm then the only car that is and always will be the best handerling hot hatch the monster Ren 5 GT Turbo the ultimate in my eyes for its day. So like I say Im happy with that part of it :)
But i have just recentle broken the 60000 mile mark and now u folks may shout at me for this my cam belt hasnt been done as of yet but thats down to funds and not having any :( as soo as i can i will be having it changed so keep your fingers crossed for me please? but since braking the 60000 mile mark i have been thinking about buying somthing else its the longest i have owned a car as i was always buying and selling my cars on i know there are no probs with this car apart from my Cam Belt needing urgent looking at and I dont know if to keep going or try and buy somthing newer and faster but i have also been told that the HGT isnt that fast considering it has 5 cyclinders and is 20v 2 litre engine! please help as i will hopefully have sold my house and I will have had the Cam Belt changed and then can look at ether just sticking to what i have or can go and buy somthing newer any advise will be really welcome so tell me what you think please :)

Annon, the HGT is slower than a glued down snail off the mark!
It's the 20valves for you, it really doesn't get going until you hit 3500rpm, but then bang, it's away.
Fantastic car, but expensive to run, though i don't think you'd regret buying one.
It depends how much your HLX is worth and what sort of value HGT you'd be looking at.
Perhaps consider a Fiat Coupe instead?

I have a 1.8 HLX too, and have been having similiar thoughts! But ive decided against changing for a year or so, here are my thoughts...

To start with, the cambelt on the HLX isnt an expensive job like on the HGT so dont worry too much. I think i paid about £175 for the entire 72k service at an independant garage (on my previous bravo).

The HGT isnt a lot lot faster, its a bit smoother maybe but the price you pay is about 20mpg, as opposed to 34mpg in my hlx.

I know the car i have is a good one, when changing cars there is always the risk you will get a bad egg.

I'm just gonna save all my pennies and then get a coupe turbo when i'm 21.

Jonathan

ps: these are my views only, im not saying you shouldnt buy a HGT, i'm just saying I havent..!

U WOT!

Pah! HGT isnt that much quicker - what you been sniffing Jonathon!!!! Having driven the whole range of engines (except the 1.2 to be honest!) the HGT is a lot quicker than the 1.8, not that the 1.8 is a slouch or a bad car, but 40 extra horse do make a lot of difference.

I like the 1.8, its quick enough, smooth enough and so much more comfortable than the HGT, but if you want back ache, stiff arms and a permanent grin, then get a HGT - just be prepared of the cost of running one!

Re: Re: Should I Do It Or Not??

I hear what you are saying on the coupe front i just dont like big cars I can drive them no probs i just prefer hot hatchs always have so the coupe is out im afraid for me. the HGT still seems to be the same as the hlx mine goes with out any probs at bout 3500 its getting it there thats the glued snail stage i know by the end of today im going to start getting people saying mod it but again is it worth it it will cost me the same money or less for me to mod me car as buy a new one if you think bout it
I like the look of the HGT but it is just a bravo with side skirts and a bigger engine in all honesty
if i was to keep me car and get an exhaust and an induction kit and chip the computer is this going to make the getting to 3500 a noticeable difference or is there somthing else to look at im not to keen on nitros so that is like the coupe a no no :)

Re: U WOT!

ok so far the HGT is a liked car but seems to have some faults are the seats in the hlx more comfortable than the HGT as the hlx seats kill me back i suffer from back probs ever since a tried to park me car in the front of a 26 tonner after hitting black ice on a back road in essex luckly for the 26 tonner who stood no chance against me in my smaller series 1 RS :) a kerb and ditch stopped our test to see who would win i still say me as my car had caught light too :) mind u the water in the ditch put that out :)

The HGT is much faster than the HLX - I got a mk2 155 and its bloody great. My fuel comsumption is better on long jounrnys there for i have noticed no drop in fuel comsuption. - Go for an HGT mate i love mine. Seats are better and i love It :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Should I Do It Or Not??

you certainly did get out of that but it doesnt help me much lol :)
the seats in the HGT is there anything in the car world you could compare them too so i can get an idea of what there like i have had RS turbos's series 1 and 2, 5 GT Turbo only phase 2 models though but boy comfortable sets oh yeah i thought the RS Recaros were nice till i got me hands on these little devil's hehe :) Cavalier SRI 309 1.9 Gti, XR2, XR3i's had the use of volvo 440 sallon nearly as bad as the cavlier on handerling but cav wins on that score hands down :) Punto GT Turbo, chicochinco sporting, ibiza diesel, i think that's oh no wait i have driven a friends citroen BX lol so if you had to compare the seats in a HGT anything up there that you could say would come close to an idea of if it would be comfortable or not come on guys this is a matter of the up most importants i need to know what to do :)

Go for the HGT 155!

I found myself in the same situation about
a year ago and tried both models but I feel
there is a significant difference in the
increased performance on the HGT compared
to the HLX.

Shop around and you should find yourself a
good deal on HGT's - value for money I think.

HGT

Stop being a poof, buy a HGT they're awsome !!! Get the leather and air con like mine and you wont regret it !

Re: HGT

poof my ass lol :) i just dont wont to buy anouther car that is 1 full of faults but 2 and most important can deliver power when i wont it my 1.8hlx has been a really good car and i couldnt ask any more of it its just it lacks the power im used too if you have driven a 5 or an RS that has had the sort of work mine had done to it then you would be able to see exactly where im coming from in my eyes i have never been in a car like the 5 turbo its just there over heating and age that has stopped me from getting anouther 1 the pull away power is a real blast and im talking before you have even done a single thing to them a 5 gt standard was extremly fast my RS's were fast but they cost a fortune to get them in the same league as the 5 gt turbos. so whilst im very interested in the brute strength of the HGT im not shore

Re: Re: HGT

Thats the most interesting spelling of Cinquecento I have seen to date lol!

Hmm comparison, like your HLX without any comfort springs to mind, however nothing as uncomfortable as sitting in a 5GT Turbo knowing that you are in one of the most laughed at cars in London during the early 90's! They were more derided than XR3i and RS Escorts were at the time, though not as bad a Imprezza's are now he he!

Re: Re: Re: HGT

lmao :)
so i would be correct in saying you dont like cars that are common like the new XR3 from subaru lol :)
And are you saying that Fiat fitted comfort springs to the hlx seats mine must be bust i thought it was a torch devise fitted by fiat to make you upgrade to there leather interior when purchasing there cars from new :) you know you upgrade your interior or you will spend the rest of your years driving a car sitting on somthing that will make your back feel like it is being twisted out of its correct shape :)
I know im being a pain I just wont to know the facts on the HGT it seems a 50/50 split who likes the car and who doesnt if you guys that like it could list your reason why and the guys that hate it could list there reason i may get a really good over view of this car before i go start looking to buy thats if you dont mind people :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT

if i were buying a bravo for the first time i would get an HGT, as they aint a lot more expensive than the HLX. I got a HLX because im only 19 and cant afford insurance on a HGT, and you get all the same luxuries in the HLX too. (I find my seats VERY comfy by the way).

I doubt i will upgrade to a HGT when the insurance comes down when i'm 21 becuase it doesnt offer me a lot more than my HLX.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT

Well I'm looking to change my car as soon as I find a job close to home and i'm going to be looking at the HGT, I would realy like to get one and it's at the top of my list. I owne a 1.6 16v and the fact is it's just too slow, I need a quicker car.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT

ok right i know there are Mk1 and 2 bravos and that the Mk2 was on a 99 plate t reg may be some s reg as well but is there any abarth HGT and was i right when i said bout there being a 5 cyclinder HGT or are all HGT 5 cyclinders?? also what extra apart from a digital reading for your millage do you get for your money and is there anything you get on the Mk2 that you didnt get on the Mk1 HGT

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HGT

The Mk2 comes with the 5Cilinder 155bhp engine over the mk1's smaller engine.

There is about 100 mods to the mk2. Front grills different lots of things.
