I don't think we're all being pessimistic.. ok some are but the rest like me are just being realists.

Wage increases above inflation will eventually increase inflation making the pay-increase null and void - apart from them who haven't got an inflation level pay rise who will find themselves worst off.

Exactly the same applies to the minimum wage too doesn't it? :bang:
yes. it didnt solve the poverty of the lowest paid workers, it simply created long term inflation.

Surely other companies would up their wages to make their jobs seem as attractive?
exactly, and that pushes prices up for everyone, but only the wages of some. the increase is wages for those people is greater than the increase in prices for everyone because the wage change only affects a small proportion of the labour market and the net of both changes is directly proportional, so the average person is worse off. economics is fun.

Go for the job of PM then... if you manage that and can do what you think can be done I would support you, but sadly I think you are misguided, reality is heading your way. I just heard the Strike is escalating as we (the pessimists) explained it would, we have seen it all before (well those of us who were around in those bad old days) I dont care about make up and nancy fairy sh*t like that, its a girly thing.

Come to think of it a Make up artist would make an ideal PM, they make everything up TBH. Its you that needs to see the world for what it is and take off your rosy Gucci specs... IMO of course...

I agree she's very naive and knows nothing about economics but I think thats a bit harsh I think she's realised where she's gone wrong lol.

Lol cos I dont wufs her u mean mate? :D People in this country are too laid back, if we accept the Governments preferred status quo we will be in the mire in 2 or 3 years. I just heard Mr Browns statement about " we must wean the UK population off fossil fuels..." does that sound like a tax cut or drop in fuel price is likely? The tanker drivers strike is escalating today, so look out for more of the same, and a world where if a bus dont pass the place you wanna go then dont go... that would suit the government. Isolate the masses.

Sorry TurboSei... its not your fault I know...

Lets stay on topic, ok maybe u dont wear labels. My bad... :(

I am just peeved that even now some people think making like an ostrich will fix things... Official Ffoxy apology... :)

chemical engineering is well over paid, didnt paul say he was getting 24k just for his year work experiance?

I think thats well deserved. He's studied hard and struggled getting by being a student to learn what he needs to know for the job. Its all about supply and demand, demand is high for professionals like paul so their salary is just deserved. Tanker drivers are overpaid as it is and they are just not in that much demand, im sure shell could go to all the HGV driving agencies and fill the posts within a week.

i'm trying to think of an animal analogy to use that would describe the act of taking industrial action that benefits no one purely due to ignorace, however i can not think of one because all animals act with more forethought than tanker drivers, which is quite frightening now i think about it.

then again, animals arent poisoned by the lies of unions so they do have an unfair advantage.

Accepted.

I didn't realise that such a small group of people getting a better way of life would ruin things for the country. I've learnt a fair bit from this thread but I still don't feel hostile towards the truckers, who wouldn't want to try for a pay rise. I doubt many of them realise the economic implications of their actions, I didn't.

Maybe I'm being slightly ostrich like but that's better than saying such incendiary things without actually acting. Whatever happens to my world I plan on looking for the upsides. Thinking negatively doesn't improve your situation, it makes it worse unless you actually get out there and do something. I'm sorry if you're an active campaigner and spend all your spare time writing to the government and raising underground resistance groups ;)

The company will have benefited more from having him for a year than you think. It gives the company a whole year to study him and decide if he will be worth the money. The potential for saving them money in the long run outweighs the very good year out salary.

:) Nah I am more an Oliver Cromwell type TBH, I hate current political parties and their doctrine with a passion, regardless of the colour of their rosettes at election time. Its time for renewal, the 2 party system has become stale and too much of a comfort zone...

I am a PMA champion by the way, I have to be. Seen me thru many tough times.
