Shell Optimax

best petrol by far is bp ultimate, it cleas your engine as you drive it and gives you a god power increase, most people claim an added 11hp out of the petrol, weve used it for our astra 1.8 that car can fend off ost bmws, mercs and some modded cars la la laa laaa, so yea the petrol is good about 86.9 where i am , optimax is 87.9 at nearest garage i can find

smurfhead i work at a ford dealership, and the amount of customer complaints you get because of supermarket petrols, youd be hard pushed to find petrol at a supermarket which is half decent. most complaints are petrol consumption problems, i suggest using branded stations, bp, esso, texaco etc.

gotta say i like optimax as i know its looking after my motor but im thinking of going back to 95 shell just to keep down the cost!"

You can't get an extra 11BHP out of optimax/ultimate....:)

Sprint blue, I recently went to the home of Shell optimax and asked a lot of technical questions, some suggested from here and some from my knowledge - I am studying chemical engineering so I believe the man was surprised I took such an interested in the workings of the fuel - chem eng students concentrate on developing and making that sort of thing, not what it does!

Anyway, if you do a search for optimax you will find my thread all the questions and answers. Basically given your car (which will have a knock sensor) you can expect a difference (we're not talking a lot but for some any performance mod if worth it). From what I saw and was told (including using a key hole camera) it can make the valves cleaner (I saw it for my own eyes, whether it was staged I can't commit) however, the man admitted that this "dirt" on the valves would only have a very very very slight affect - not quantatitive - and you could remove it at any point and has no lasting affect.

And even then an actual power increase would be hard to measure....

I was going by the probably good assumption that he didn't have 300BHP...

Hi,

OK OK, bound to get lots of abuse! Or not!

I swear by Shell Optimax in my Ford Mondeo [2 litre c130 bhp]; I also ONLY use Shell Diesel in my 2.2JTD Ulysse. Why? Shell, together with Texaco, are the only fuels to contain the right amount of detergents [that goes for 95 and 98 ron]. Also, the price is offset by the increased mpg [10% potentially], but that is not the issue surely.

Use supermarket fuel? Pay less now, pay for it all later when the engine goes early. And if you read Telegraph Motoring [very few of you, maybe!], no supermarket chain will guarantee their petrol [if you stick to one fuel wholly, there is a potential claim against that fuel supplier if things go pear-shaped!].

At the end of the day, each person has to make that decision for themselves.

Flak time......

Stuart

Sorry Stu no abuse ( I know you like it )!! I totally agree with you Telegraph's Honest John -who soes seem very honest!!- swears by optimax -and I trust him completely. I don't use anything else but Optimax in the Abarth and the other day I filled the Panda up with it (The Panda will probably spontaneously combust) but it has made the engine so much smoother it's amazing...

Does your Alfa have a knock sensor Steve? If not, it's all in the mind.....

The only possible thing you can gain from it is cleaner valves, however, the same clean valves can be gained from using optimax for approximately 4-6 refills and then using the car on normal fuel for a good time after that - the dirt takes so long to build up it's a waste having it all the time.

Remember I got this from the horse's mouth, the chief tester of Optimax for Shell Industry who had a hell of a lot of experience with the fuel on all different types of cars.

Yes, that's true, if the car is set up for 98 then it will help :)

You know the Ferrari F575 we saw, Ferrari recommended 95!

What a difference this makes!! I'm well impressed with this stuff! Sharper response and a bit more kick! Only downside is the price of it 80.9p per litre here[:(!]

There's a certain satisfaction you get from driving over a Sleeping Policeman

God damn thats cheap, here in sunny Greenford(W London), optimax is 89.9ppl!!!!!!!!

Bloody hell, 80.9p a litre is good even for normal unleaded! I managed to find the regular stuff for 79.9p at Waitrose last week, needless to say I took the oppurtunity to fill the Punto right up! Then on the way to get the Capri, I stopped at a service station on the M1 and got royally shafted - 89.9p! Robbing gits!

As for the Optimax, it makes a very slight difference to the Punto in terms of response, and it pulls a little better at high revs but it's only just noticeable. And it'd be a waste of money in the Capri as that runs a carb so the extra octane wouldn't make any difference. Incidentally, the Capri is designed to run on 4-star; at the moment I'm using unleaded plus Redex lead replacement additive, does anyone know if this stuff is better/worse than LRP? For that matter, does anywhere still sell LRP?

Correct me if Im wrong, so using Shell Optimax in a Punto mk2 1.2 16v instead of 95 ron would make no difference to the engines efficiency, performance or longetivity
