Only low boost? Uno turbos can run quite happily and reliably at high boost (1.0 bar - up to approx. 150bhp). They only start getting unreliable when you go beyond that figure.

Bet your Cinq turbos won't stay in one piece at 1.0 bar for long! :nerner:

your comparing an engine designed to be turbo'd with a modded one ;)
 
My waxoil was free and not 1 scab on my uno!!! the floors will be out soon enough in your chickmobile car! cant see you pulling much FLUFF!!! in a cinq!! Ha ha!! Ant

a mig... all i need now is a runway and a source of jet fuel...
and neh don't like punt gt much :( its the oldskoolness of the uno that i like, but i am all too aware of the pitfalls.

No some probably wouldn't though Chris's Cinq tuebo that used to belong to jamie and then Sam before that has clocked nigh on 90K and it has run at anything upto 1.2bar for extended periods of time.

"Extended periods" covers exactly how long? ;) Rememer that the UT was designed to run at 1 bar from the outset. It was only wound down to 0.5 bar when Fiat realised that it's performance would eclipse the bigger and more expensive Strada Abarth 130TC. And also because they realised the standard handling couldn't cope very well with the extra power... :rolleyes:


Though has to be said driving in rain must send shivers down any Uno drivers spine, in case the floor drops out, or the rear suspension collapses, doors fall off with rust or the chassis flops about, or brakes fail to stop you as they have as much retardation as sticking your arm out the window and using the palm of your hand as an air brake :p

You buy a UT then you must also invest in a welder! :p But to be fair, they are much older than Cinqs so of course they're going to have problems. Just see how many old Cinqs have cooling issues now. And rust!

And as for reliability, what happend within weeks of the new owner buying your own Imola Blue turbo? :nerner:

True, but I was pointing out that a UT is reliable at high boost pressure whereas it seems many Cinq turbos are only reliable at low boost. ;)

UT's are old and WILL give you problems unless very well cared for or restored - not many 15 -20 year old non turbo cars will be trouble free so you can't expect a turbo charged Uno to be any different. A Cinq turbo should in theory have less of a rust issue problem, but this is offset by the fact that a Cinq turbo is a conversion and unless it's been done properly it will be as reliable as playing with a hand grenade with the pin missing.

Also worth bearing in mind that the recent RR test with two turbo Cinqs and one 1.4 16v conversion showed some interesting results - mainly that the n/a 16v was more powerful overall. Seems that many turbo Cinqs are NOT running as much power as they claim, whereas 150bhp at the wheels of a UT is quite feasable with just a few choice modifications.

As for weight, a mk1 Uno 45 weighs about the same as standard Cinquecento as the Cinq is a lot more 'solid' in construction. The Uno 45 mk1 has a kerb weight of 710kg, which if I remember is almost exactly the same a Cinq. The turbo Uno however is heavier at over 800 kg because of the extra equipment and heavier engine. So as a turbo Cinq has extra equipment too that will increase weight over standard, but it will still be lighter than a UT.

Personally if I wanted a turbocharged Fiat I'd get a Uno Turbo. If I wanted a quick and reliable Cinq I'd do the 1.2/ 1.4 16v conversion. I like the looks of both, but having had a Cinq as well as a number of Unos the Uno is more practical because it is roomier inside. But then this is offset by the Uno being older, more rust prone and getting hard to find certain spares (especially mk1 models).

Alex, your best bet is to try and drive a UT before you decide. It feels very different to a Cinq so you might prefer the Cinq instead. To conclude, both cars have their plus and minus points so really it's down to having an older car built as a turbo in the first place, or a newer car that is modified to be turbocharged.
