hi,can anyone tell me the differance between a sealed and ported sub box?,at the moment ive got a 12" pioneer sub in a sealed box but i have just got a matching sub and want to get a double box but dont know witch to get,can any one help me.

thanks

righty, ice 101!!

in my time working in an ice shop i learnt many things hahaha including not doing a lot ;)

ported boxes are a complicated thing but in essence give a louder sort of bass but only at the tuned frequency which depends on port length! the longer and bigger the port - the louder the bass will be at a lower frquency i.e. good if you listen to d&b, rap etc. but if the tuning is wrong then when the bas frequency drops below the tuned frequency of the box the sub moves ALOT but there is no sound!! in other words, its soon gonna die!!

as an example test of this, find a crappy old speaker and attach the + and - to a car battery and see how far the cone travels in one direction then imagine it doing that one way then the other lots of times! SUB DEATH :(

for a good overall sound tho you want to use a sealed box as the bass will be "tighter" and give you that boom boom hear you from a mile off sound but also the sub will be sealed into the box and will be able to take more of a caning as the air pressure behind the sub acts as a cushion for the subs cone!

overall - ported = louder bass at one note
sealed = overall good bass wihout worry of popping sub!

yes and no!! it depends wot kind of d&b :p lol

if you like to listen to most of the stuff ppl in my area listen to (rap, dizze rascal etc) then ported is best!

if you get a nice high wattage sub and amp, seal it and it wil sound gorgeous! im running a jl audio in a sealed box and the bass is more of a moving shaking bass, rather than ported which just moves air, if you get wot i mean??

p.s. luke, want competition for status of ice god? lol :D :worship:

that is true, some specific subs are designed only for one type of box, but generally they can be used in both types of box

but if you wanna get picky there are always free air subs!!!!!! which dont use a box at all!

iam now the true ice master lol :p mmmmmmm greaaaaaaaat!

p.s. what subs you running paul?

In my car I am running Pioneer 12" subs. I had the same sub both in ported and sealed enclosure.

I prefer the ported enclosure for that particular model, especially if it is the black sub, which is similar to the competitions subs.

I even had free air subs (pioneer) put in sealed and ports enclosures, one of which was an 8". Till now I never blew a sub, those pioneer subs are strong.

Anyway, it all boils down to your music preferance and if you can build a dimenstionally correct enclosure.

I prefer a sealed box......its easier to build! :D
