Thought I'd revive an old similar thread than start a new one to keep Stu happy :D

I've noticed more and more that, when I fire mine up from cold, it sounds rough as s**t when it's high idling, but returns to "normal noises" when it levels out at "normal idle" speed. Seems to be getting worse . . .

Any ideas?

When was your car last serviced?

August 05. Due soon!!! MOT retest tomorrow so, if I remember, I'll mention it then. Had almost an oil change (they put 2 litres in, 50%!!) in december.

Hi there rroope can you be more specific about the noise  you are saying its a screeching on high idle or what ?
Have you had a look under there while the engine is on high idle [choke] have you checked belts/alternator bearings/waterpump/cam belt tensioner/etc :)

Mine rattles like a diesel until it settles down to a smooth idle and sometimes the squeeking noise too... like short bursts of slipping drive belt :( Thank crunchie I have an extended warranty ;)

Ok, only ever happens when engine is cold (pretty sure of this!), as in temp needle is at relative 0.

When you start the car, the engine revs high (up to 2500 maybe?) and then comes back down to just over 1000 (numbers guessed); so it's running on choke. It's the stage from engine kicking over to settling at the 1000 line (i.e. first couple of seconds) where the noise is heard.

The noise is basically like the car has a JTD under the bonnet, and an old one at that! Sounds awful!! Really raunchy sounding

But then few seconds later, all is back to normal. It's so strange, and it doesn't do it all the time, i.e. when a FIAT technician is trying to diagnose it!!

Ok a few things here come to mind as a possible cause but firstly is your 03 stilo high mileage ?
Ive also picked up from your posts that you have not been regularly checking your oil leval IE- on one post you said that it had a mini oil change:eek: anyway lack of lubrication will be a contributory factor in premature ware so ime thinking that your camshafts[tappets]may need reshimming probably not all but the odd one or two maybe. Oil is delivered to the camshafts by way of small pipes and these small bore pipes may have a partial blockage and may not be giving adiquate oil supply on first time starting now tell me is it noisy also if you start up say a few hours after you first initial cold start if not that will be because there is oil still coating the cams /buckets ect and is the over night parking at home a flat area or a slope if its a slope then with low oil leval it will be harder for the pump to pick up oil in the sump and deliver it to the engine so it will be running dry for those few vital milli seconds and if your on a slope oil that normaly hangs around on the top end of the engine will drain back hope that helps you in some way and it would be worth while getting the gapping checked between cams and buckets just in case :)

Hey Phil

Firstly, it's done 30000 miles. Secondly, when the garage put the 2 litres in, the dipstick was near the bottom; they've slightly overfilled it! Thirdly, doesnt matter if it's flat, facing uphill or downhill, it still does it. And, the engine sounds sweet as a nut, except for the first few seconds, but sometimes it never does it at all . . .

Some times never does it at all you say so does that apply also to the first start of the day when the engine is stone cold ?

Yep, only on first start; give it a few hours for needle to go back to 0, then restart the engine and it WON'T do it . . .

In my mind that tends to give it away as I said earlier from cold the oil has drained back from cylinder head and the cam gear [tappets]buckets etc are dry or have little oil to lubricate them hence the rattle/screech deisel sound on cold start and as this has gone on and on premature ware has taken place between cam lobs and buckets have your valve clearences checked to see if all is ok now it doesnt happen later because there is some oil left around the cam gear ect which acts as a buffer between parts and it only takes a second or two for the supply of oil to get around the valve gear hence no noise on that start up please get your fitters to check clearences and if need be get them reshimed and also have your engine flushed and refilled with fresh oil and new filter fitted incase there is any obstruction in the supply to the valve train:) hope that helps(y)

Now now get a grip no need for the  :D see me thats better :) have i looksee at the other post also about start up noise ive never delt with timing variators so thats also worth considering :) or should that be more :( any way get the clearances checked as well better safe than sorry :)

does it feel rough and making the car judder? I had that once on a day that was -2, felt as if the coil pack was putting in a little protest for about 30 seconds, then it settled

No, can't feel a thing, just noise - think i might record the noise then take the soundclip to a FIAT dealer - 3rd year warranty runs out on Friday (and I'm going to Leamington Spa tomorrow!!)

i had the same noice from my 1.8, was the variators, got them replaced under warranty- problem gone.
Unfortunetly its back again, had it at Fiat, they couldn't hear anything - typical.
will put it in again next week!!!!!

Thanks for that fredster, I'm thinking it's this too; my 3rd Year Warranty has now expired, but it's on a MasterCare warranty until August and this fault was reported before the warranty ran out; car is staying at the garage until Saturday morning now, I hate being carless! (Although I'd hate having to spend hundreds of £'s a few years down the line!)

Hey rroope, hope its all ok for you. Let us know how you get on wont cha? Dont think the 1.6 has a variator does it?

Yesterday's episode, as a result of leaving the glovebox open accidentally all day was 4-5 twist of the key to start it, ran on 3 cylinders to the out barrier of works car park where it cut out... 3 cylinders to the next t-junction, then got fed up and blatted it one, which seemed to clear it! If I want 3 cylinders I will buy another 1.0GLS Swift :D
