Erm, not really, you'd have to unpeel the sealing rubber around the inside of the sunroof but thats it - the headlining only needs to be dropped, not removed.

There are two antennas inside it and a gyroscope, the GPS antenna is very sensitive to shock motion and can damage easily.
So the factory fit unit uses a gyroscope to detect actual turns at junctions etc. That's quite impressive as normal hand helds have to work out car orientation purely dynamically (using sat data + predictive & assumptive software).

Can it still function if the gyroscope fails?

Not quite, the original uses GPS location at when the signal is strong enough to get it's location. When you get no signal (i.e. going into a tunnel), the unit uses the data from the gyroscope and CAN network (speed/direction) to continue giving Route Guidance.

If the Gyroscope goes, it won't work when you have no signal. If the GPS does, it will use the Gyroscope. There is a function on the unit to manually input your position (coordinates) and direction angle so that it can use the pre-determined start point you've just entered to calculate where it's going, without the need for a GPS antenna.

where abouts in cardiff are you dreamworx? and what stilo you got? might see you driving about (y)

rich, that seems logical enough, i did feel its a bit of an add on, but the reception is fantastic. have you got pics of the original antenna? because my phone side of things is fine, if the antenna houses both, why would one go and not the other?

hi mate

got the 110 JTD, 3 door, bluey, grey, pearl colour,, so far i really like it. I sold my golf GT TDI mk4 for this!!. only annoying things so far is
no sim card holder present
no GPS working
and cruise control makes the car stutter at times as if the engine is cutting out!!! grrrrrr

i work in the centre of town, and live in barry

dreamworx, the £15 ones are on ebay - I can get the original antennas cheaper, it's just if you feel confident enough to fit them.

Oz, it's the antenna on your roof! There are two antennas inside it and a gyroscope, the GPS antenna is very sensitive to shock motion and can damage easily.

how cheap is cheap?? ive read its a big job to remove the aerial!
might go for the cheap one as if this doesnt cure the problem then its only a few quid lost i guess??

where can i get the head unit removal pins from? halfords?

Ebay ones are a good idea to test it, and much easier to fit.

If you order the antenna from an Alfa 159, it's much cheaper and got lots of cabling, which reduces the number of connections in the Stilo (hence less of a chance to go wrong). It's about £60 cheaper than the Stilo aerial.

Thanks for that.

odd thing happened last night, it worked! then went to my gf's came back out drove home about 30 mins away but it wouldnt work again!!! only thing i did was go into the boot :s confused . com!

Doesn't sound like antenna problem then - usually they die forever, not to come back to life for a few mins!

If you shut the boot and it caused a problem, it could be the wiring in the roof - the Stilo has about 25cm of wiring out of the antenna before a join in the roof, then it carries on down the drivers C pillar, catches up with the back loom to go under the rear sill, under the B pillar, under the drivers sill, up round the back of the dashboard to it's second join behind the "My Car" panel (the panel used to access the menu on the instrument cluster, with the foglight buttons). Then, it goes behind the dash to the unit.

Park the car in open air and see if it works. If it doesn't, bang (without excessive force) the back drivers side of the inside of the roof, and see if that makes it come on. If it does, bingo - wiring problem.
