Rusty drum brakes

Well I finished my first wheel refurb and have now fitted my Multipla with 17" black alloys. They look great on BUT now my rear drums really stand out, they are so rusty.

I had a quick look around on how to fix them up but I don't have a drill to use with a wire brush, can it be done by hand? Anyone successfully done their drums up who could give me some tips please?

In the old days before electrickery and such, hands was the only thing we had to work with. Course, you younguns have it easy these days...just flip the switch and it's done..

hahaha, I don't get called a youngster all that often now that I'm 40

I can't see it being harmful as it's only the outside of the drums, as long as you are careful. Maybe some wet and dry paper to finish with.. tbh mine will be getting that way as they get older and I will not be cleaning the outsides, unless it's for a very good reason..at nearly 60 my days of grovelling around a car are kept to a minimum..!

lol, yes I can understand that... so will have a go tomorrow then, will give me something to do if nothing else

They are likely to be cast iron, so will never be a smooth surface, so just a wire brush will work best. Once clean, use a heat resistant paint, preferably one specifically for brake drums and calipers.

Black would be as oe, any other colour will catch the eye through those wheels.

those pretty wheels you mean to say, lol. Thanks I will try to get to it today.

No need for heat resistant spray, nor specially drum/caliper spray.
Any ordinary black spray paint will do, the outside of a drum doesn't heat up like a disk does.
I've been using Holts ralley black spray on the drums of my cars for years with good results.
When changing winter wheels for summer alloys, a thin respray every year will keep the drums nice looking!
And yes, I only use a wire brush once in a while.....

For once i will agree with Peter

At this time of year your going to have one hell of a job getting any form of paint to dry......

i tried telling a lad this years ago as he loving lavished plenty of halfords finest VHT paint onto his corsa drums... Ignoring the advice of nice thin coats built up over a few days ....


End result next morning he drove to collage to find the centrifugal effect of the drums spinning had slung the paint all over the alloys in some lovely spiders web type effect


several hours and a few tins of thinners later he got most of it off........




What i did with mine on the last GP

was clean the loose stuff off with a wire brush

then degrease and rinse well with water and dry......


and applied this stuff

it goes on with a blue colour which goes black with a slight blue hue...

then once dry i misted it with some cheap black rattle can stove paint

Pink? I'm going black for now, and whenever I get the desire to paint my calipers I will rethink colours

and I think a flashy blue would be awesome just not sure on the drums, if it would be too much

anyway, when I started planning how my Multi should look I decided on only blue and black and I'm getting there now, spraying my fiat standard 15s a metallic black as we speak, lol.

The only other colours now are the rear lights and side indicators.... :idea:
