Hi, i have a 98 punto and because i did not place proper amount of antifreezer in my cooling system, the water in it freezed during one day in winter. I was riding the car and it started to smoke from under the hood (because i had ice instead of water in my cooling system). I was not far away from home (about 15 km) so i decided to ride home. Every 5 km or so i stop to let the engine cool down. But it was still overheated, thats for sure. Now my colling system is repaired (there was cracked hose which was also causing leakage of coolant), but the car seems to have less power and it eats more petrol then before. Could that ride without working cooling system somehow damage the engine? What could happen? Can it be repaired? I put the car to two mechanics and they dont know where is problem.

have a compression test done
you will be looking for poor compressions due to collapse of piston rings due to extreme heat
find some other mechanics too if they havent done basics for you
its also possible your coolent temperature sensor has been damaged which would cause car to run on overfuel
