Technical rumbling noise from underneath Fiat 500

Rasputin 🐿️, the Younger Mrs S's 500 (1.2) is similarly afflicted. Rumbles on some surfaces and then just when you convinced yourself that it's a dodgy wheel bearing etc. you hit some smooth/new tarmac and the beast is dead silent.

My thoughts; If the noise was mechanical, it would happen all the time... better or worse depending on the speed, road surface etc. but still audible. Rasputin doesn't do that.. when it's quiet, it's a mouse.

The beast has some Manzini Touring S1 Radial tyres fitted, which must have been "budget" since the previous geezer fitted 4 new ones just prior to selling it... so they've been my chief suspect for a while. But as they wear down, the noise has remained the same.. so I'm not entirely convinced enough to hang them for it.

The beast has had new wishbone arms.. which made no difference at all.. Your problem is not the wishbone arms.

If I had just one guess what it was, I'd have said nearside front wheel bearing... apart from the noise sometimes disappears, as above. However, I did notice that there is some play in the nearside front driveshaft. When I say "play".. it's barely nothing compared to my old Stilo, which ran a CV spider with only two of the three rings intact and a load of mashed bearings, for ages, and was only slightly noisier.. :D ) but the rumble/grumble is very similar.

I'm going to (service soon) take the inner CV/spider out of its cup and inspect the bearings and the cup for wear. Driveshafts aren't too dear and the beast will need a new clutch in the summer anyway, so it could be a no-brainer to change it. It'll be a good time to listen to the wheel bearings too.. but I'd be disappointed (in a way), if the driveshaft spider isn't the culprit.

hello and thank you all for your helpful comments - i can only describe the noise as a rumble and it seems to be originating from front area and it's only on uneven or rough surfaces (ie. when the road is not smooth and flat)...it sounds like it could be front suspension - both garages heard the noise yet couldn't locate it! Recommended that i continue to drive it until the noise gets much worse/louder ad then they will be better placed to locate it - it does sound like a process of elimination ...i will try to record but i fear that the sound will not picky up on phone but i can try - the garage replaced the rollbar/stabiliser links as they said this would be the cause and it was only when they drove it after replacing that they realised this was not the source of problem.... I agree ref lunacy of replacing part after part until find source as this too will be expensive for me as I can't do this job myself....

Rasputin sounds like a lunatic like mine! And yes the rumbling is only on certain surface and no rumble on lovely roads - the beast doth not rumble on lovely roads!

Yes the air intake horn on the 1.2 is always worth checking as it can be spectacularly resonant if loose. And if the car has plastic undercovers fitted as well (including towards the rear like on some Lounges) then also worth a wiggle to check everything is rigid. Wheelarch liners too...there's potentially a lot of stuff that can resonate if not tied down as intended.

Worth checking the battery and plastic engine top cover are tight. Also check bonnet stay rod is snug in it’s plastic clip. Although more for rattles than rumbles  could vibrate though.

I think the Younger Mrs S's Rasputin is making exactly the same noises.. and if so, then it's definitely a rumble. It sounds like knackered driveshafts.. but then you hit a smooth bit of tarmac and it's absolutely silent.

I checked the spare wheel, in case it was "vibrating".. but the sound is defintely "front wheels" (bearing, driveshaft, gearbox or tyres).. a kind of resonance. I'm going to change the clutch later this summer (before it wears out) so I intend to have a look at the driveshafts and wheel bearings properly at the same time, to try to work out what it is... the total silence on a good surface makes it an odd one.

The Fiat 500 front suspension. A constant source of unwanted noises and steering input for us.

As can be seen from another thread I ended up just replacing the lot. Tried the easy things, but in the end I just replaced everything.

Overkill, but now the car is quiet and doesn’t decide to steer to the left on the odd occasion.

I suspected the top mounts and an aged strut that was beginning to weep were the primary cause. Even those bellows make a load of noise.

You really can chase your tail trying to locate noises on a car!
Engine bay noises are easier with a garage stethoscope but road noise! It’s either really obvious or just an annoying sound that only rears its head now & then!
In the beginning I had lots of noises .. growling.. thudding ..squeeking …all different reasons & all gone now!
Unfortunately an ageing car (like a human) can and probably will develop the odd growl or groan

If you can live with it… turn the radio up! If not (and I couldn’t) start with the suspension (front) my 500 before I swapped the suspension for new sounded great on flat smooth roads… as soon as I hit rough tarmac or potholes ect … Jesus she sounded like a mini tank!
