Do the 500's have an interior roof lining at all?

As mine is it has a bit of carpet type material bonded to the roof above the rear seats but isn't very good?

Just wondered if their was anything available as cant seem to find anything on the usual part sites....

TIA

Cheers for that, I'll look into it as I don't know how they fit or ever seen one fitted to be honest hence trolling the parts websites to see if they are readily for sale....

To be honest I'm not sure what I should be looking for, I didn't think it would have the roof lining support wires in like a conventional car but didn't think it would have nothing for the potential of condensation forming in cold weather hence my dilemma.....

The part I linked to is just a grey piece of padding that's glued to the rear-most part of the interior roof, inside the typical 500. It's probably just there for sound deadening effect, or to make the roof feel a little less tinny. It may also have a minor insulating effect. It's just glued on. It's about 1.5 cm thick and has a plasticky, but textured surface that reminds me of diamond plate steel. The edges are unfinished, and if you look closely, you can see the underlying padding material on the cut edges.

I actually bought that exact item for mine, because mine had a decal stuck on it when I got it, but I never installed it because when I removed the decal, there wasn't much residue or decal outline left. If I ever do install it, I can tell that it will go on by just pulling the old one off, gently scrubbing the roof interior (don't use anything too hard for this or you'll dent the roof from the inside) and then gluing the new one on with suitable fabric adhesive, like 3M Super 77.

Hi Rob

Here's how they look when fitted, this is the original one in my car. They are just glued in as far as I can tell.

How's the restoration coming on, hope all is moving on well?

Cheers

Cheers all, I get it now.....

Gary I've done relatively nothing to be honest as I've been too busy. I've rebuilt the carb and dizzy and got it running sweet now and I'm just sorting out the brakes and electrics as I'm going to MOT it and get it all registered properly before I start the full resto.......

I'll get some pic's up once I really start on it and collate a build thread.

I never changed the roof lining on a 500 but did several on the 126 (full length lining). Back in the day, we only had Evostik Contact Adhesive!. What a sickening, headache-inducing job to have to do in a workshop on a hot day!

I always reckoned the best way to do this job was when/if you had the car mounted on a Rotisserie for body repairs and could turn the car upside down....

Another problem to overcome when doing this job (especially on the 126, as you're dealing with a full length lining) is how to support it in place while the adhesive sets - modern adhesives are probably better than 'back in the day'.

We used to use a few thin lathes of wood (e.g. strips of 1/4" plywood) which, when flexed, applied light pressure to support the lining in place with a clean floor mat interspersed to avoid pressure marks/damage to the lining.

The job reminds me of trying to install ceiling plasterboards while working alone. Maybe the telescopic supports for working with plasterboard could be modified to use here? Or possibly a large airbag (as used in recovery operations etc.) on a suitable support structure inside the car would work?

But I'm probably overthinking the job, as on the 500 it's such a small lining?

Has anyone used double sided tape to attach the roof lining rather than glue?

I’ve got mine stuck on with some 3M double sided tape. Make sure the roof is really clean. Put the tape all around the edge and as much in the centre as you can get. Press it on and hold it there as long as you can. It hasn’t fallen off yet

Thanks. I’ll give it a go.
