Rip off!!

I do actually HATE the way insurance is charged and find the system hugely unfair, despite being old enough where it really doesn't matter much to me. (yep - I'm an old fart)

If I had my way, I'd abolish this ridiculous weighting on new drivers and just give them the benefit of the doubt, as I think that huge premiums only deter people from actually insuring their cars, making us ALL worse off.

My theory :

Allow new drivers to pay 'normal' premiums, but make the excess something stupid like £500 to prevent folk from making stupid claims.

But also make it clear that ANY accident that proves to be their fault will incur a MASSIVE premium hike.

So - those that are sensible get to benefit from a lower premium (meaning no-one tries to avoid insuring their car - something that affects us ALL if we have a bump with an uninsured driver) and those that drive like twonks get rightly penalised.....

Win, win IMHO

Hmmm, sounds just as good as the idea another member had of paying £2000 for insurance and at the end of the year, if you haven't claimed, eting £1700-£1800 back.

How would insurance companies make money and cover their risks? They are a business at the end of the day after all ;)

It may sound silly (actually it doesn't sound silly it's the most sensible thing you could do) but up your voluntary excess, even £100 should bring it down nicely :)

My policy is at £0 voluntary, I saw a 6p discount for volunteering for £1200 (and nothing for anything else), so sod that tbh!

It really is just a random number generator most of the time.

Just done a comparison with a ford fiesta 1.3 and my 1.1 punto same year same everything including insurance group, guess what £20 a month cheaper on the fiesta. 1.2 8v AND I only have a 1.1 punto but a 1.2 75 same year but the sx model, SAME PRICE! WHAT THE FECK!

How about £2k insurance but we'll reduce it to £1500 if you fit the T-eye or similar camera system - and if you crash and we find the system hasn't been running, we'll not pay you a penny?

Yep, sounds far better. Wish insurers recognised them.

Everyone I've asked has said no :( :bang:

I assume thats via malicious disconnection rather than a manufacture/cyclic stress fault?

Yes, intentional - I'm off out for a burn with my mates so I'll pull the plug on the camera!.

I cannot believe that in this day and age there isn't a device that can be plugged in to a car's existing ECU to monitor much of the driving habits, speeds etc, combined with a cam in the dash and uplink to a sat - the iphone has the built in gizmo for playing golf or spirit level or driving games so it is obviously aware of it's position in space?
I wonder if it will come for all vehicles in the not too distant?

Sisters Panda is fitted by a giro sensor by her insurance company to monitor driving style, and GPS to monitor Speed, so there part way there ;)

such a device could be designed/built over the CAN bus but no-one will build such a thing for inclusion in a car until they are given a good reason like legislation or financial incentive to increase the unit price of the vehicles or mount the devices as an 'after market' bolt on for insurance recording purposes etc.

And how much less is she paying for having that?

Dunno. Think its about £200 cheaper for the year. If her driving habbit is good she'll get a further £50 back at the end, or if its worse she's has to pay another £50 or something. I dunno the in's and out's but was a good deal all in.

Also acts as a tracker should her car be stolen.
