I've got a problem with my Bravo. Shortly after starting driving and when not pressing the accelerator, the engine starts to REV on its own. It goes between 200-3000 revs & just hums up & down continuously for a few minutes. This can be quiet embarrassing, at time, as it looks like I want to race.

Have any idea why the car is doing this? I just had a full service - timing belt (+ holder) changed new shocks etc but it still does it?

Hi Tom, the car is a 1.4 (13xxcc) Fiat Bravo SX 1996.

It has only started doing this in the last 3-4 months.

(100 16v 53k)

my Bravo sometimes likes to do a warm up dance when cold and driving around using the clutch a lot. It seems to rev like this until warm and then nothing. Can only assume it is the management system charachteristic as its not dangerous. It just feels like it is idleing slightly faster than normal for a the odd moment now and then.

Marko, that is just the ECU keeping the revs up while its cold.

Ever driven a car with a manual choke? :)

.

Tom an ECU wont keep the revs between 2000 - 3000rpm for a cold start, will be 1500rpm maxiumum.

Its probably your water temp sensor, stepper motor, idle control valve or throttle pot

engine self reving

Big history of this with my 1.2 mkii Punto, though was more extreme (up to 5000+ rpm !). Eventually got the dealer to recognise the problem (oh...the stress...) they changed the throttle body but it did it again while they were test driving it (massive luck), they changed the ECU (thank f*ck for warranty)- and to this day, some 6k miles on problem solved!

Re: .

Tipo, I was commenting to Marko not the other guy. There are not many engines that will sit at 850RPM even when stone cold.

It will be sticking idle valve, all toooo common problem.

Slap its wrist and tell it to grow up! LOL

Mark.

Try cleaning your idle control valve (i used brake fluid)

Re: Re: Re: Reving by its self (Pull up to lights & the car wants to Race)

Use WD40, not brake fluid :)
