Is there a feed from the Magneti Marrelli Nanoplex set up you can use for a tachometer? I don't know if you can use the crank pulley sensor feed directly or if there is a pin out on the ECU you can use? IIRC pin 2 is not used in the standard Wiring set up.

Thanks

Steve

Steve pin 2 is diagnostics so I don't think that would be any good nor the crank sensor as that from my understanding is just a switch, so that as the lugs on the flywheel pass the sensor it completes the circuit telling the control unit to tell the coil to discharge by sending an earth from pin 7 on the control unit.

I am pretty sure you can connect it to the negative on the coil or pin 7 on the control unit as this is the pulsed side so will pulse quicker as the RPM goes up.

Tony

Thinking about it again perhaps you could take it from the crank sensor as that would pulse at the same rate as pin 7.

Thanks Tony, for the info, I'll try both pins and see what I get.

cheers, Steve

No probs Steve. Out of interest I assume you have the control unit and wasted spark coil fitted on your 500 or you wouldn't be asking the question. Whereabouts in the engine bay have you got them? Could you post a picture? As I need to find a decent place for when I install the 650 lump I have got.

I do, but it's sitting on the bench in the garage waiting to be fitted, rather than in the 500 ;)
The plan is - MOT and registration docs completed on Friday, engine & gearbox out yesterday, engine bay cleaned up, re-wired and new engine and gearbox in before reg docs arrive back. :)

Looking at the engine bay, I was planning to fit it to the rear bulkhead on the Left hand (cooler) side.

I'll take some pics and post up. Depending on how my evenings go this week, it should be all in by the end of the week.

Hi steve
Are you converting to alternator generation?
I'm completing the same works as you at the moment.
New cables in my new loom for additional instruments and the voltage regulator alterations.

Hi Andrew

Yes, re-wiring for alternator, adding wires for oil pressure sensor and tacho guage feeds, so looks like the same as you. Then I'll be removing the existing coil and adding the wiring for Nanoplex install.

Cheers

Steve

I've gone for tachometer, oil pressure sender and oil temperature. I was hoping to also get an oil pressure switch to bring on warning light in emergency.....

I have a tee piece....one leg for oil temp - one for pressure gauge sender......I have no means of placing the original switch to bring on waning light....

Ahhh now there's a thought...

It might be worth looking into that, as I'm not sure how good the temp reading will be off the t-piece. You'll need to ask someone who knows something about this, as it's outside my knowledge area.

Also, I haven't opted to fit a temp gauge yet, so not something I've looked into or asked an expert.

Hi- has anyone a picture of where in the alloy 3.5 litre sump you'd tap a hole please?

Dont have a picture but on the side of the sump is a boss where you can add a threaded hole. A job I'll be doing in the future

You mean this one in the right hand corner...

Cheers Steve I was thinking to mount it on the rear bulkhead where the rear seat sits on the other side but to left of central, as you say it will be cooler and the HT leads etc will reach plus it is close to the wiring loom so easy to add the additional wires into the loom. Plus you can get to the nuts behind the mounting plate to tighten it up.

Mine all is still fitted to the original 126 mounting plate, so I am trying to make it as intrusive as possible.

Hi Tony

Yes, I'm planning to use the 126 mounting plate too. This is the general area where it's going...

The limiting factor, if I use the supplied loom, is the length to the sensor. This area keeps everything out of the way and reaches the sensor ok, when the engine is in place.
