removing the ecu

removing the ecu

I think there is a 4th bolt, just to the left of where the '2' is.

But mine has not been mounted like that for a while now :)

i managed to reach the bolts where the ecu is directly fixed to the metal plate on the battery casing, although it took about an hour!(it was dark too). well worth the trouble though. the car is so much better at pulling at lower revs. i recommend it to all mk1 1.6 owners!

Where did you find the 1.6 chips?
Where are the Danish blokes?
How much it costs?
Is it just the EPROM for original ECU?

Just a word of warning - we had this email in last night... and will explain what I mean about being scared by what you orignally posted....
Heard About : Google Adverts
Notes : hi please please help me i bought a new chip for my ecu online the chip came with no instructions and im pretty sure ive now fitted it the wrong way round as ive now tried it both ways round and all i get is an attempt to start followed by a clunk or thud???? is this any thing to do with the starter motor or is it more serious!!! also the fuel pump starts as soon as you turn the key and pressurises the system but you can now hear it releaseing the pressure under the intake manifold?? please help as this chip may have cost me my car??

if a chip has been put in the wrong way round, i'd imagine the ecu as well as the chip is dead :(

Bye bye ECU!

An engineer I used to know at IBM had a funny incident with an EPROM, he fitted it the wrong way around, turned it on and the chap he was working with commented "I didn't know they had lights in them" as the chip destroyed itself.

quite, however i still dont see the relevance.

Like everyone else on here (it seems :))i build computers for a living, however some cases are trickier than others to open, doesn't mean i dont know what i am doing once in...

I found your original post insulting and not the kindof answer i would have expected from such a well known forum as this.

******** was it insulting - it was funny and taken as such by people who read it for what it was. And I still do find it amusing that whoeve posted that they cant get the nuts off was about to play fishing for chips!
As most of the people who posted on this cant be arsed to log in I have no idea whether it was you or anyone else, not that it matters - if it had been Tom I would have made the same remark as he would have of me.

I love you really Nige, even if you do like diesels ;)

Matt, do you take the appropriate static precautions when building computers?

You do get alot of sarcasm on this forum but the advice you recieve is free, and you dont have to take it!

@nige u can use the ip's to see if it is the same person!

I used to work in a computer shop when i was in school, must have built over a thousand pc's from components in the 18 months i was there. Never used to take static precautions and i never lost any components because of it.

Thats not to say you shouldnt be careful, but the static problem is over-hyped. I have to laugh at those wrist bands PC world sell so you can constantly be earthed whilst upgrading your pc.

Just touch a radiator before you start and dont wear polyester socks :)

If you cannot open a PC case, why on earth would you tackle your ECU?

Don't get me wrong, i hope you simlpy open it, put the new one in and your away...after the last 18 months i feel very capable messing with electrics but you certainly wouldn't get me touching mine. ;)

Well, after reading this little lot I went out and fitted mine! I have to say a little terrified! I realised the severity of any mishaps with the ECU, so with caution removed my old one and pushed the new one in place. I'd heard it was as simple as this, so thought why not, certainly wouldn't have done it if I hadn't heard report over the last week of how well it works!
Made sure it was in the right way(!) and resealed the unit so no damp can get in. Putting the key in the lock I was shitting it! It was a relief to hear it start!

It really does make a difference. I now don't have to rev it over 3500revs to get it to pull. It simply pulls all the time! Plus seems to make a meatier noise from the induction.
God knows what it's doing to my fuel economy, I'm gonna keep an eye on that over the next few weeks.
