hi all,

i have a mk2 1.2 8v active

need to remov steering wheell...so far iv managed to take off airbag and un clip wiring...noticed that there is a plastic 24mm nut holding the steering wheel on

do i just unbolt it and pul the wheel off??

somebody told me i need a new plastic nut is this true? or can i just use the same one again??

also do i need to align the steering or summat for refitting as i dont want to have the wheels straight but steering wheel bent lol

It's not plastic. The metal once right in the centre. You should use a new one of them afterwards.
If you're just taking the steering wheel off just centre the wheels, don't touch them and make sure the steering wheel goes back on the same way it came off.

ahhh so do i not have to remove that 24mm nut then??

please reply asap mate really need to know this cheers:)

whats the metal one in the middle??

Once you've taken off the airbag, you will see a rubber / plastic nut at the base of the wheel. Simply lever if off and it will expose the 21mm nut (at least in my Mk2b/Mk3 it is 21mm). Simply remove the nut with a suitable socket.
As said before, before doing this, make 100% sure that the front wheels are perfectly straight. Once the steering wheel is off, don't muck around with the wheels. Do what you need to do and put back the steering wheel exactly as you took it off.

I've done this a couple of times and a good tip is to mark both the steering wheel and the steering wheel column with a marker. This will help you to align the 2 when refitting.
I know that the manual says to replace the steering wheel nut but, IMHO, if you're very careful, there is no real need to do so.

On mine the splines were not continuous so the wheel would only go back one way. But better safe than sorry - don't move the wheels and marker pen the shaft & hub so it goes back correct.

cheers yes i have taken it off now...just got confused with a reply on this thread thats all...mine was a 24mm socket sh*t tight lol and all i did was put the steering striaght and pull key out so steering lock came on dead straight then remove nut...my steering wheel had a indented arrow on it and the colum had a indented line which lined up and the steering wheel only locked on the splines in same position anyway lol

Yeh same here mate...allso had some indented factory marks on wheel and colum

replacing it with a sporting ?

dash out, but hopefully get a sporting wheel while im at it

first thing you should have done is disconnect the battery and then wait at least an hour before touching the airbag. mk2 wheel should only go back on one way so it dont matter if wheels move

well yeh the battery has been off for hours before i touched it....anyone know of anyopne sellin sporting steering wheel?? cant find on ebay lol
