Technical Remapping a t/a

Sorry for the derail, but would you recommend a Remap(Panda T/A)?
I remap everything. Generally things I've owned are well underpowered. I had a Vito that wouldn't go up hills, a remap made it perfect. All Mondeo's I've owned were spot on. The panda 4x4 - simply dreadful on long journeys. Worst mpg I've ever seen since my first cars (Jetta, Escort etc).

Remap changed that all round. But still a tiny engine.

Slippy and sloppy driving conditions - perfect. Even able to go places Humvees couldn't as it's much lighter. Horses for courses. Only change something if it's doing your head in!

Wait…what, you had your TA remapped?
I want to know more about this as I’ve only seen those ‘units’ that sit between ecu and engine as I thought the ecu couldn’t be ‘broken and tamed’

My understanding is - anything with an ECU can be remapped. I guess anything with an OBD can be done.

My engine was so small, I do kinda think "what's the point". Noticeable better take off. Fuel economy was still dire with the petrol engine - but - that's because of how I was driving it (expecting 1.6 tdi performance from an 850 cc petrol, my driving style combined with a small tank made things unbearable for my longer than normal distance driving).

Cheers, you must drive like me… I’d just assumed from other threads, and my own research, that they were piggybacks…if you’ve had yours done, what and who?

I don't fully understand how it works tbh.
A mobile mechanic I use in Swansea remaps everything Ive driven over the years.

He rips the software off the vehicle, comes back an hour later and flashes the memory somehow.

My understanding is, he alters some parameters (guessing this is what a map does).

I have mega trust in him. I'd be a bit twitchy with a cheap generic map on anything.

Ah right, there’s a Welsh company that did remaps for Fiats, can’t seem to find them.
I’d much prefer a proper ECU reprogram than an add-on.
My second hand (year old) MK2 punto sporting had a piggyback on (from a Fiat dealer!) which I didn’t know about till it developed a fault, which I traced to air flow meter, wehn I found this ‘black box’ with an Italian flag on. Disconnected it and the fault disappeared.

Never heard of a piggy back - it's just additional programming?

Can well recommend:

Mobile Mechanic - 07863 547388 / TLD Mobile Vehicle Repair. Based in Neath.

He's pretty much the best mechanic I've ever seen in my life.

Also does remaps in the field.

Excellent, cheers
Piggyback is just a little device that sits between the ecu and engine sensors and modules and ‘tricks’ the existing ecu to produce more power, cheap ones just do more air and fuel, more expensive ones change turbo dynamics, vvt etc, but they are just tricking the ecu…even some of the ‘big boys’ admit to using piggybacks for certain makes/models, eg quantum and Celtic, but guessing they’re the higher end

Advantageous to unplug if there's an issue. Bad maps are harder to rectify. I'm guessing dealers would also say it invalidates the warranty.

I just wanted more than 20mpg 😂

Quantum and Celtic

Yes Celtic have been discussed before, seems to be a gap between 2023 and 2011 for those that have actually remapped and those pondering it…which also leaves a gap in long term life with the remaps.
I’m not doing it yet anyways (curiosity got the better of me) as still have loads more practical farm stuff to do, still going through stacks n stacks of raw fleeces for grading into, wool, washed fleece for crafters, raw fleece for those that want to do it all and fleece for planting (slugs hate it)

I have consulted a firm in Norwich who do a comprehensive remap and can change the power and torque charcteristics as required. The tech man showed me how they access the MAP and the options to change which could put the power to c 110hp. My first first TA was sadly lacking in E.CO mode, so I changed it and the new one is fine. I have decided that the small amount of power gained would be unlikely to make enough difference to warrant the cost particularly in view of the DMF potential issues and raising stress on this. My TA goes well enough for the road and easily overtakes HGV's on busy A roads and with all the cameras everywhere I question the value in this course. It can be done however and I would be interested in what it feels like, as there is still an itch.

I’m not so bothered in outright speed, which is also governed by your ratios and final drive, however, getting there quicker and, if the figures are to be believed, more efficiently (more mpg).
My 128 Coupe had twin twinchokes, rather than the single one, it was a flyer but you couldn’t get it past 105 (disused runway I hasten to add). I was going to stick an Uno Turbo box in but, the written off car that came in was substantially found to have a cracked box

Was that Clive Atthowe ?

If so, I can’t recommend them highly enough.

My brother’s business in converting vans into campers means he gets a lot of customers who have bought vans and want him to do things like fit windows and pop top roof beds but want to do the other parts of the conversion themselves. He had a guy with a very low powered 88hp transporter and asked if anything could be done about the low power especially as he was going to be seriously weighing it down. My brother phoned Clive who said send it over, and a couple of hours later it came back with literally double the HP with the before and after rolling road results to prove it.

My brother now sends many vans over for work

I believe it was.
