reinstalling windows

reinstalling windows

I have all my prog drivers on another partition, plus backed up to a mem stick ;)

Then just run through them once installed.

BUT yes, does take time.

Theoretically, you should format and re-install WINDOWS every 18-24 months to keep your disc at optimum running levels, I do this and you realise when you put a fresh install on how much more effecient your machine becomes, yes it does take a while but it's always well worth it, ust remember to back up your important files to transfer onto your fresh install, good luck!

well i have my progs on the other hard dive partition :p but ive done a fresh install on the 2nd hard drive for now. so i can D/L stuff and access it on the 'old' harddrive and install it.just a pain.
TBH im not happy with the pc just now and im pretty sure my few month old mobo is faulty :(

I have changed from a Desktop to a Laptop and I've never looked back, I've got an Acer Ferrari, Turion ML-44 CPU, 4GB DDR2, 7200RPM Hard Drive and so many features there are too many to list, this machine flies and is as good as any desktop I've owned, should have done it years ago.

Norton Ghost your PC once you have just freshly built it. Then you can re-install windows and all your applications in about half an hour.

If I spent the RRP of that laptop on a desktop PC, I'd have an incredible PC

isnt it a pain?
cant find your discs, need to source programs again, drivers, cant remember passwords etc

:bang:

pc decided to die today and fail on reboot
wouldnt repair(i dont think ive ever had one repair!) so starting from fresh again

Never source anything ever again... or Install most programs for that matter, and drivers, registry tweaks.... ;)

I have a cool laptop from work - Dell Lattitude D420.

It's small, light and very cool. It's pointless though for anything apart from office aplications and RDP. It has issues just playing a DVD! Compared to my Mrs's Vaio which she bought 3 years ago it's rubbish. Especially when it comes to that incredible 17" x-black widescreen display. Still looks as crisp and bright as the day she bought it.

What is the current price of one of them Ferrari Acers? Last time I looked they were the thick end of 2 grand!

I'm aware of that Stu and pound for pound a desktop will always be better and outperform a laptop, but Desktops are a bit last Century, they are bulky, cumbersome, take up lots of room and are just plain ugly. I released a whole lot of space when I removed my PC Workstation and chair and my room looks tidier and bigger.

Laptops are slim, attractive, stylish, ultra portable, and when you're finished you stick it in a case and hide it behind your sofa, loverly! I honestly believe this machine would give many Desktops a good run for your money, it never fails to astonish me!

I sense a Desktop vs Laptop debate........................................

I sense a Desktop vs Laptop debate........................................

There is no debate, as it is like comparing a go-kart with an F1 race car. They're not the same, thought they both do a similar job.

Sure laptops are more convenient, but they have a lot of disadvantages. Ever tried upgrading one? What happens if you need to install a lot of extra PCI cards for instance? Compared to a desktop, laptops are a right pain to upgrade (and much more expensive), which is why after a couple of years or so laptops become almost worthless whereas a desktop could probably be upgraded to a later spec for a reasonable cost. And pound for pound you will always get more power and facilities (except portability) with a desktop compared with a laptop.

Remember that a lot of people can't justify the cost of a laptop so have little choice but to stick with a desktop. In time I suspect laptops WILL overtake desktops, but unless you really need portability and space is an issue a desktop makes more sense until laptops offer the same performance for the price.

PC World announced last Christmas that lap top sales were 4 to 1 against desktops.

Also, they are very easily upgradeable these days, most of the chassis is quick release and lock, the CPUs aren't soldered in any more and they can easily cope with memory, wifi card, hard drive upgrades and they have a pci slot to which is convenient.

Yes, but suppose you wanted to upgrade your sound card, your graphics card, add a video card for TV and video editing and maybe add more USB ports via a PCI card? And as an example, I am setting up a PC to do music recording and am using one of the 5 1/4" drive bays for a dedicated multi input panel with my Soundblaster ZS card. Unless I missed something there simply isn't the space in a laptop to accomodate all of those at once, something a desktop can do with ease.

Don't get me wrong, a modern laptop has a lot going for it, but even the best laptop in the world won't be able to accomodate all the hardware I'm installing for my system. And even when you can upgrade a laptop it will cost more pound for pound compared with a desktop.

I really don't think that the comparison between a desktop and a laptop are realistic. And as another analogy, it's like comparing a Fiat Croma with a Fiat Seicento. One is small, compact and efficient, the other is larger, bulkier but more powerful and has more features. Can you see them being compared head to head in a road test? No, because you're not comparing like with like!

Saying that, when they bring out a laptop that costs and performs the same as my desktop AND can accomodate and do everying that my desktop can do then I will be first in the queue to buy one :)
