This may be a coincidence, but it seems when I use the blue key then engine sounds awful when idling (revs changing up and down) while when using red key the other day it sounded perfect.Could this be to the way the key interacts with the ecu?Should i get a new blue key cut?

Probably a coincidence

I would suggest that it doesn't matter what key was used. The keys contain a transponder which tells the 'electronics' that it is a valid key being used. As far as I know there is no other data transmitted.

If the idling is still bad check the connecting plug that goes into the ECU under the bonnet (ie. disconnect & reconnect)

DONT use the Red Key

The red key shouldn't be used as a day to day key, not even to start the car 'once off' this key opens the memory to the ECU so that BLUE keys can get programmed into the Keycode system. There is a special way of using the red key for this purpose but the likelyhood is that using it once will leave the memory open to abuse.
