Hi All,

Have a Fiat Punto Mk2 (2001) with 60,000 on the clock.

When car is in neutral and idling things are okay, pressing clutch
in there is a rattling noise from the engine area. The gearbox now also 'crunches'
when putting into reverse and also the other main gears are feeling a little more
difficult than usual.
Have tried bleeding the clutch slave, but this hasn't made any difference.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Mark

If it's the typical 5 speed gearbox it's probably your bearings. Do you get a sort of rotational grinding noise as you drive off in lower gears?

Thank you for your reply, yes it is the 5 speed box. when you say bearings, do you mean
the clutch bearings? If so then how would I resolve this?

If noise is occouring as you have your foot on the clutch pedal
The gearbox noise comes into play? If your stationary and this noise occours its not the box as the gearbox internals are not spinning

Probably the release bearing having a wobbly - if the pedal is heavy then its probably about ready to punch through

Thank you for your response.

When stationary and in neutral, the rattling noise happens when clutch is pressed.
If reverse gear is selected, there is a 'crunching' noise as this gear is selected.

So if it is the release bearing? What would the solution and potential cost to resolve this?

Thanks again,

Mark

Well IF that's the only problem and you don't have any other problems on the gear box the suggestion is a clutch kit with a bearing which goes around £30-40 depending (excluding labour price of course if you're not doing it yourself). Getting the gearbox out of these isn't that hard compared to some others but if it's going to be done it's always worth to thrown a whole new clutch in it with a near bearing
