Hi, I've got a W plate 1.8 Hlx (mk2, /w aircon) and I think the Radiator fan may not be working. How far up the temp guage does the needle have to go before the fan comes on? I haven't let it get into the red (yet) but it's been just under several times and the fan still hadn't started. I'm getting fed up of driving round with the heater on full to keep the temps down. I had a mk1 1.8hlx a few years since, and a 1.6 mk2 before and those never went more than one notch above halfway. I bought this one in November so it's never been this warm before.

I've checked the fuse and thats okay, i wanted to connect it to the 12v and test the fan on it's own but there's a few sets of wires coming out of it and none of them seem to match the colours shown in the Haynes. Does anyone know which ones to test? There's a red and yellow pair coming out of teh connector near the middle of the fan which seem the most likely option but i don't want to break anything.

The cooling system is otherwise working fine, the car keeps it's cool during normal driving for the most part, but these recent hot temps and heavy traffic is bothering it a bit

I've removed the air inlet and disconnected / reconnected all the wiring to the fan unit, and now it is engaging between 1 and 2 clicks above midpoint. I presume there must have been a dirty or corroded connection in there somewhere. At least I know now when the fan should be engaging, I'll keep tabs on it over the coming weeks.

In the meantime I found this thread which has some great information in it for anyone with similar problems.
