Technical Query about the fuel gauge

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the small 'brown screen' in the fuel gauge?

Does this little screen has any functional purpose?

Low fuel warning. It lights up like a mofo when your car starts to go below 1/4-1/8th of a tank, giving you no excuse to say you didn't know it was nearly empty. The first time I had it come on was during some spirited driving, I thought I had broken something with this flashing light coming on mid corner

No worries at all. If you manage to find one, give me a shout, because I could do with one for mine as well. The Haynes is the best that I have atm...
