Ill stick this here as there is that many Punto sections/models i am not sure what one to use.

When and what model was the last of the 1.2 8v Puntos? I am having Stilo rage so going to MOT it and sell it. Due to lack of use i want a car that is cheap as chips to TAX/INS and run. It will be either a Punto or small diesel engine Fiesta. I use a van more than my car so it would only get used once or twice a week if its lucky. The Stilo does not like sitting around in damp/wet weather. Now and then it gives the ABS/ASR warning and i cant be doing with that rubbish. Lookin to get a small car with less electronics

Cheers

I think the 1.2 8v was still used right through to the EVO, which sort of defeats the point of having a car with less electronics. If I was you I'd be looking for a Mk2/2b.

Edit: Having driven a Grande with the 1.2 8v I'd steer clear of anything after the 2b as it's just too big and heavy for that wee engine.

Thanks for that. I do like the look of the MK2. Is the facelift one with the grill still MK2? I am just presuming the 16v will be the same tax as my 1.2 Stilo. Think i pay £180 for the year. £30 sounds better for a car that will sit in the street most of its life.

Have you ever driven the 1.2 Stilo? I am thinking that is to heavy for the engine. Its great on fuel and once wound up it will sit on 80/85 all day on the motorways in Europe but it does struggle on steep hills.

The facelifted one is the Mk2b, but essentially identical otherwise. I've never driven any Stilo tbh, but suspect you're right that it's also going to be too heavy. One of the first cars I ever drive was a Mk2 with the 1.2 8v and it felt pretty nippy, and basic enough for what it sounds like you might want.

The mk2b 1.3 16v multijet diesel is only £30 a year to tax and more powerful than the 1.2 8v

Look for a dynamic model and you get remote locking electric mirrors and aircon. Very cheap to insure and you can get the claimed 62.5mpg

Spanner in the works.

I presumed all the early ones were 1.9 hence looking at the Fiesta. Shame i was not looking now as i seen an 04 plate on Gumtree for just over £700. 70BHP also. My stilo is around 80 so due to lighter car i doubt i will notice the difference apart from in my pocket.

Cheers mate (y)

True, but it's a far more complex ( read expensive ) vehicle to maintain long term,

Limited life Camchain ,

Common rail diesel pump + injector issues,

hopefully it's too old for a DMF..??

you don't get better than a FIRE petrol for cheap+ simple..;)

I disagree. I've done over 80k in mine (now on 120k) and the only beat it missed was the water pump seal broke and it spat all its coolant out, but because they run so cool I didn't notice till I parked up and smelt the coolant, then looked to find the bottle empty. A £45 pump and it was back on the road.
Never needed the chain replacing.
No DMF
I've not known them to have injector problems but pumps are very cheap ~£100
Glow plugs £10 each, I've had a set of those.
And the clutch costs about the same.

How many petrol puntos have 120k on the clock with only one spark plug change and no cambelt change , that you'd be happy to get in tomorrow and drive £200 miles up the road.

Cheapest car I've ever run

chains seem to be 120 / 150 k - reading between the lines..but you do see a few that let go @80 - however the design means you can rebuild for circa £350,
have to agree with diesel running COOL,(y)
