Hi there

Im in the middle of getting a new engine installed in my mk2 punto (x reg - 2000). But before i needing this done my head gasket went in the old engine. i realised that when i was driving my car or waiting at traffic lights the fan would never cut in when it was suppose to.

I know that the fan was definitely working cause when i put the positive(+) and negative(-) wires up to my battery the fan goes like mad. It works with a perfect breeze. However when wired to its original wires it does not seem to turn on no matter how long the car is sitting idol and heating up.

I was told of these possible problems:-

1. I was told that it may be a relay from the 'Fuse Box' ???

2. It may be the thermostat is not functioning properly - hence not
letting any water in to cool the engine???

3. It could be a temperature sensor that is not functioning. If this is not working it can stop the fan from kicking in when it should due to the sensor not being able to give a reading ????

If you have any ideas as of what it could be, please give me your thoughts on the issue. PLEASE HELP ?????????

Thanks

A relay is an easy fix, you can take it out and test it with a small 9v battery across the terminals and it should make a "click" when you do this.,.

as for the termostat, you can check this by feeling the water hose that comes out of the termostat and goes into the radiator(this is the top hose, not the bottom one that goes to the pump) It should be hot if the engine is up to temperature, if its not then the termostat is stuck shut.,. take the termostat out (2 10mm bolts i think) and break out the spring and locking mechanism so that the water has a clear path through.,. put it all back together without the bits you broke out and test it, if it works go buy a new thermostat and you done(there not expencive).,.

if this isnt the problem then you could have air in the radiator(common fault).,
make sure your heating is blowing out HOT, if not then it could well be Air in the rad.,.

there are two wires(wraped together with a clip on the end) going into the bottom of the radiator right beside the bottom of the filler bottle, unplug this and bridge the two wire with something metal and the fan should come on.,.
Try this and if it works it most likely air in the rad, if it doesnt then either the wiring has a break in it or the fan motor is dead..,,
