The gearbox on my Punto Active sport I bought recenty has a couple of issues. It makes a horrible grinding sound when running in 1st gear. A not so good sound in 2nd, but OK in other gears. It engages in each gear OK. I recently put a new clutch in , but already this has started slipping - I wonder if I have oil leaking onto it from somewhere - how likely is this on this model?
ALso, since I replaced the clutch, the position of 5th gear has moved (both at the gearstick and also at the selector itself (I wonder if I have damaged the internal selector as we accidentally used the selector to manhandle the gearbox back into the car (it was a tricky manoeuvre). Sorry this is a complex problem - so any ideas would be welcome.

Very common for oil to leak onto the clutch. Either gearbox oil or oil from the crankshaft seal. If leaking gearbox oil it's common for the input bearing to be knackered.

Noise in 1st and 2nd may well be the synchro destroyed and If 5th had moved the the gearbox aswell you may have shifted something out of place

The noise and the oil leak are likely to be the same thing. The front bearing inside the gearbox fails and allows the shaft to wobble about. This lets oil through and makes the noise you describe. Don't know about your selctor issue I've often handled the box in the same way with no problem. It's not a very difficult repair as gearboxes go to change that bearing but you need to do it right away.

would get a gearbox specialist to check it over,is there high milage on it?

It sounds like a new (used) gearbox is the best option. The moved lever position could be the box or the mechanism under the gearstick.

Hi Thanks for your reply - this sounds logical. Are you actually suggesting I repair the bearing in the gearbox? (I have visions of cogs and springs flying out in all directions and never getting the thing back together again - or did Mr Haynes scare me unnecessarily by giving it 5 spanners). Would it not be better to get an exchange or second hand gearbox? What do you think?
