Hi newby JAKE here - I recently got my first car - Its a Fiat Punto 1.2 - 2003 petrol 62.000 miles - The gearbox selection is heavy - to quote "top gear" it feels like your stirring treacle !!! - A quick flick through the "Haynes" shows theres a cable linkeage between the gear lever and gearbox - I,m hoping its just a cable replacement job - My dad is an ex mechanic , and "Scooter" enthusiast So is pretty handy with italian cable controled engines (Both lammys and Vespas have MILES of control cables under them panels ) So he shoiuld be OK to fix it .. UNLESS YOU KNOW DIFERENT ....Anyone out there in forum land ever succesfully refit one ? - anyone had an absolute nightmare doing one ?? ...Anyone recvomend profesional garage only ???... Or should we "go in "

The Wd40 was our first port o call , did both ends but no change , thanks "varesecrazy" I,ll use them photos, and will remove the console and try squirting / lubricating directly down the "inner/outer cable. will let you know how I get on , cheers guys.

On the Punto HGT we had I have to replace the mechanical arm linkage on (top of?) the gearbox. This links one of the cables to one of the box selector shafts. Cables were fine.

Possibly your Punto has the same arrangement problem.

From my car service file I have:

08/01/04: Service - Nick
0043,848 New Gear Linkage assembly - bracket/arm/level that conveys lateral
gear level movement via cable to up/down selector shaft movement.

New part was stripped, bushes removed and geased with MRM2.
Re-assembled and fitted. Removed battery tray for easy access.
Cables pop off the ball joints with gentle pressure.

On old part the natural gear level left/right spring return was
no working and the lever was very stiff. Aluminium corrosion and
furing, behind the plastic bushes had squeezed the bushes tight onto
the moving shaft.
