Few tools required..just a little patience

feel around the base of the gear knob gaiter with your finger tips,
there is a plastic ring that attaches to the lower dash panel with a series of "spikes" / tabs,
carefully prise-up the plastic ring..all the way around..
( like removing an ice-cream / paint lid):idea:
do NOT raise 1 edge up too far..slowly work around the whole thing.
of you've got this far to remove the gear-knob..now is the time,
I found that getting a decent grip on it and just pulling upwards did the job.. it appeared to be held on with a set of moulded serrations ( splines),
on reassembly I used a splodge of epoxy / araldite inside the knob,
then push hard back onto the steel rod
( do get the alignment correct--!!):bang:

NEXT - on dash-removal - you will find there is another more solid ring / base attached to the lower dash pod,
this is also just a lift-off fitment :worship:
except the 2 x GOLD headed Posi / philips screws shown at 11 and 1 0'clock in pics.
shown upside down to reveal spikes / tabs,
here is it's more natural look , with the slots it clips into partially visible
