Hello everyone

My Punto engine light and steering light was on this morning, now of course i have been freaking out a bit and had the AA guy come out. My speedo was not reading correctly between 0-30, he also gave me a P0500 error, battery was fine according to him, he also checked fuses and had a look in over the engine, he did not touch the coil pack. He suggested a new speed sensor, so i'm inclined to get a new one. Does anyone know where i can find a speed sensor or help me identify the part i need, i'm new to this and could do with a little help. My punto is a 1.2 8v active 2004 reg.

Now for the odd problem, A little later in the day i noticed my tyres looked a little deflated, i pumped the fronts up to 31 and rears to 28 and both the lights on the dash go out after a few uses, my tyres are 165 70 14r 81t and above the average PSI. Could this be leading up to a more serious problem with the steering or could the front tyres at 29 psi contribute to the warning lights?

P0500 Vehicle speed sensor (VSS) - circuit malfunction Wiring, VSS, ECM

So the ECU is recording a fault with the Vehicle Speed sensor
This is a Critical sensor for the power steering
Without the speed - the Powersteering unit will basically have a hissey fit, as it doesn't know how much assistance to provide
So it puts the light on - and gives a small amount to play it safe

So the inaccurate speedo
The powersteering light been illumninated

I'd followed the 3 steps of testing from autodata
Check wiring - then Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) - ECU fault / check

29psi is correct for front, however - i run 32psi as well on fronts
A little lighter on steering and more response from tyres too

Hi, and WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Is this a non ABS car? If so it may require the VSS wiring MOD. It fits the classic symptoms as well as being a 2004 car.

Has the fault re-occurred? are the EML and EPAS lights now out?

If it has ABS then disregard the above.
