Hi all, newbie to the forum so thanks for having me...
My childminder has a 2003 Punto 1.2 8V, nice little car, had it a couple of years.
She called me Friday to say the car had starting juddering and making a "knocking noise"
First impressions- engine misfiring, no change in tone when i pull the plug lead on cylinders 1 or 2- both not firing. if i pull 3 or 4 it cuts out.
The knocking noise sounds like severe detonation/ pinking when you try and blip the throttle.
i went over yesterday, changed the plugs (not been changed in years- No1 was so rusty i had to hammer on a 13mm 12pt socket to get it out..) and changed the plug leads (yes they are in the correct order). We have a spark at all 4 plugs but still 1 & 2 cylinders not firing. This would rule out coil packs in my opinion as they are paired with 1 & 4 and 2 & 3.
I am going back over today to do a compression check on the car, to rule out head gasket between cylinders 1 & 2. i will also check the cam, make sure that's not wiped out.
Anyone any other ideas? Could the ECU be playing up? I need a new one anyways as the ignition key is so thin it's close to snapping, so was going to fit a complete lock set and ECU.
Any advice would be appreciated.
