Hello,

Im not sure if this is the right place to ask, but hopefully someone can help.

I've got a T reg Bravo, 1.2l, now a few months ago the speedo on the car broke, i tried replacing the sensor as advised on here, but it didn't solve it. So i took the car into the garage when i had it mot'd and asked them to look at the speedo to, they told me it was actually the sensor inside the gearbox that had broken and that i'd need a new gearbox fitted.

As i didn't have the money for a new gearbox and fitting i left it and just drive by the revs now. But what i've realised is that the odometer doesn't count up on the miles now, its stuck at 84,000 or so. Im assuming this is because the speedo isn't working, but does anyone have any idea if there's anything else that could fix this without a new gearbox? I was thinking of leaving it but im guessing that would create a problem on the next MOT if the mileage happens to be exactly the same as the last one?

Any advice would be great
Thanks
Matt

The MOT will not be a problem, they will just log the milage on the dash and will probably not even notice it is the same.
Re the speedo sensor, I think you will find it is removable from the outside of the gearbox and not an integral part of it. Check with the fiat dealer (or one of the guys here will confirm). I could be wrong but I am sure the garage you spoke to are talking bo****ks about needing a new gearbox.

Thanks, the MOT was my main worry, but if the mileage won't be a problem then at least thats one less thing to worry about. I did change the sensor thats outside the gearbox but that didn't seem to make a difference, so it must be another one somewhere. I'll take it to another place to get looked at and see what they say.

If you have already changed the gearbox unit then there is a possibility the speedo itself or the wiring is faulty. I assume the speedo 'counts' pulses from the gearbox unit so it should be possible to check it, unfortunately I am not sure how. Hopefully one of the boffins on the forum will be able to shed some light on the problem.

if the garage that said you need a new gearbox are right then what they mean is that the spedo head drive within the box has broken off the diff

this is very rare but can happen it's a plastic gear running round the diff it's self there fore taking road speed

now this part can easily be changed simply buy removing the rear portion of the diff casing should take no more than an hour tbh buy a skilled mechanic and the part is very cheap but unlikely i doubt it

to diagnose this sort of fault you would have to look into the hole were the speedo and drive gear goes and see if they can see/freely rotate the gear and it's general condition probably whan they did

i think it's far more likely that the wiring for the head is faulty

or take the sender unit off the top and take the gear out aswell these have a habit of shearing too

it's all very well changing the sender but you need to see that the sensor is being tirned buy the gear beneth it

all these parts with the exception of the one round the diff can be looked at or changed in minuites with ease i cant see why your garages are strugling to diagnose them
