Problem with Fiat Marea

Hi,
Posting here in hope that someone may have an answer to my problem.

I have a Marea SX 16v 1998 (R-Reg) that has recently started playing up.

Once i start the engine and then drive off every time that i hit the brakes the car stalls as if i had switched the car off, the battery and oil light come on. I have to then turn the ignition on for the car to restart.

The car drives fine until i have to apply the brake again and the above problem happens again. This happens around 10-20 times or so and then it disappears and drives fine for the rest of the day.

The problem then rears its ugly head each time i start the car after it has been sitting idle for a couple of hours.

I have had various mechanics look at it and they say that they cannot find anything wrong with the car as they don't get to see the problem.

Has anyone ever had/heard of succh a problem and perhaps have a solution or suggestion to try ?

Many thanks

Duncan.

IF you just lift the throttle and dip the clutch does it stall? Or does it only happen when you hit the brakes?

It only happens when i hit the brakes, and after a while the problem goes away.

Does the pedal feel change? Do you have to press harder/lighter when its doing this?

Tom you thinkin of one of the two sensors for presed clutch or throtle potentiometer ?

Nope. The petrols don't have clutch sensors as far as I can tell.

My guess would be his brake servo is nackered and is causing an air leak into the manifold.

No the same amount of pressure is applied to the brakes.

As for you thinking the brake servo, ( i know very little about cars ) would that not make the prblem happen all the time then ?

If it turns out to be this, what would be required to resolve this, new part ? and any idea of approximate costs ?

Cheers

Duncan

The easy way to tell would be to clamp off the servo hose. (obviously don't drive like that unless you have strong legs)

Can you stall it at standstill? If you put your foot on the brake does it stall when you're not moving?

No it doesn't stall at standstill.

Been out in it this morning now and when at stanstill applying the brakes does not stall it.

I did however pump the brakes whilst the engine was on and it took almost 15 mins before the problem appeared whilst i was driving - only happened a couple of times and has now appeared to have gone for the day, no doubt to appear tomorrow.

Cheers

Duncan

Do the revs drop when you push the brake pedal while stationary?

What engine and whats the MPG like?
