Well all the bits that are screwed into that gear assembly unscrewed and screwed back in and didn't look corroded, messed up or broken.
I also managed ( after buying a new socket set with a much bigger bar ) to get that rear right hand light cluster off to find that some a**e at the factory must have used superglue or something on the thread of the tricky nut and the hard residue is all over it. Anyhow, isn't the bulb as two seconds with the multimeter proved. Realised I could have proven it all along just by putting some juice down that cable.
So, left with gearbox switch and ECU, a job for the FIAT garage tomorrow morning.
