I am experiencing intermittent failures with the power steering on my 2004 1.2 'Dynamic' model. When it fails there is an audible warning followed a Power Steering 'fail' message and the steering goes heavy. No fault codes are indicated when the system is operating correctly after a failure. On reading previous posts it seems that the problem is with the Power Steering Motor and/or Servo Unit. Is there any way of telling which it might be as both units are expensive to replace. On removing the cover beneath the steering wheel it would appear that the Motor unit is relatively easy to remove but there appears to be an electronic unit attached to its underside into which the multipin electrical plugs connect. Is this the servo unit? Any help would be appreciated, as repair by a garage has been quoted at £900 plus!

Has anyone replaced the electric steering motor themselves? It seems a straightforward job and having the unit refurbed by BBA Reman costs £295. They claim to modify it making it more reliable and you get a two year warranty.

I have had the warning light on in the past a fresh battery seemed to keep the problem away, though I have had one incident recently some two years later maybe the cheap battery I bought is on its last legs.
Try a fresh battery much cheaper & you never know.
