Hi all I've got a 07 grande panto 1.4 who's a bit poorly! I've had her from new and this morning my power steering failed pulled over stopped the car ignition off then back on again and it came back on again. I got home and did a bit of research and read it could be a power issue or my colum is on on its way out so I cleaned up my battery terminals cos they were a bit mucky checked for loose connections then started the car again an I've noticed it now makes a little screech for about 2 seconds on start up and it's not a belt or starting motor kind of screech either does this mean the chances are its the column it's self on the way out

Just had a listen and best way to describe noise is a motor slipping or skipping pretty high pitched as well

could alternator problems cause this? Been doing a bit more research an the noise sounds alot like a video I watched with a squeeling alternator!

Yes. As usual, start by measuring voltage with the engine running idle.

well the noise isn't coming from the alternator just had the aux belt off and started her up and it's still there! Alternator feels smooth and free as well. The noise started straight after the power steering failure so could it be the power steering motor slipping when it's first engaging and is on itsway out or is there anything else people think it could be? Il see if I can get a video of it up

Noise when starting my punto: [ame]http://youtu.be/aKnuEvrIbfg[/ame]

It normally lasts a little longer but when I came to video it it stopped making the noise typical!

well just been under car with my cardboard tube with the Mrs starting it up and it seems as the noise is coming from around the cam belt area not my powersteerimg so I'm non the wiser I would say could be water pump but I had that and my cam belt changed less then a year ago! It doesn't rain it pours!! Off to get alternator checked out make sure it's charging ok but after that I'm stuck any help would be greatly appreciated don't fancy forking out 100 just to find out what's wrong with her and I've had issues with my local dealer already

voltage on idle with no load 14.2 voltage under load on idle (with heater lights hazards interior lights) drops to 12.2 shouldn't it be in the 13s just noticed as well heater fan goes faster with lights off

Please make the video public so we can watch it.

What's the voltage with only main lights on? (No hazards, rear glass heater, fans etc)

The voltage with just the lights is 14.2 still. I'm working on the video side of things! Just thought I best mention I haven't had a new battery on her yet so current ones 7 years old!

Can you check if this noise is coming from starter motor?

7 year old? Maybe it's time for a new one... (a bad battery can cause weird starter motor noises)

btw, what gives you the biggest voltage drop? lights + fan, lights + rear glass heater or lights + hazard lights ?

TBH, fit a battery NOW.. it's the worst time of year for battery..,

could save you lots of time / hassle in the coming weeks, ;)

Got a battery on order went for a bosch one off eurocarparts should do the job! Never had any problems with the old one so jus didn't think but I reckon we've had our money's worth out of it! I had to take the multi meter back last night could only borrow it for the afternoon so I can't get any more readings and next chance I get going to whizz starter motor off an give it a clean. Could the power steering failure been a combination of water in the alternator with a knackered battery and the first proper freezing night we've had this year I wonder just had my drive done and it is slightly angled and was raining a bit on the day before the failure and the failure was about 5 mins into journey pulling out of a junction at low revs with lights on an heater blaring full blast and heated rear window on as well? I've done 3 or 4 hours of driving since and everything seems fine!

The sound In the video is certainly the starter motor, the steering failure is most likely the battery being old cold and the car being used for short runs with lights and heaters blaring out.

I wouldn't worry at this stage about replacing the alternator
