I know this seems to be a common problem and that there are relavent posts already on this forum however, i just thought i would check if there have been any developments.

For some time now i have been getting the intermitant problem of the power steering failing (steering becomes really heavy, light on dash iluminated)

Is the best advice still that i take it to Fiat for a full coloumn replacement?
Or is there any chance there is a cheaper way out of this problem.

It still freaks me why every morning the power steering is fine but then later in the day it goes, Surely this eliminates and loose fuses or doggie conections and is something to do with sensors? I have read that there is also some association with cold wet weather? whats all that about?

Anyway. Anyones advice on this matter (which is depressing me like you would not beleive) would be very much appreciated, even better would be someone who nows how to repair this problem cheaper than Fiat.

Cheers, Pete (aka Manclad)

I would imagine you can replace the column yourself with a 10 and 13mm socket.

and the ecu (not the column that goes wrong, i think its the steering computer) is the bit that tends to go AFAIK, and have heard of them going for less than £200 for that bit (if I'm not getting confusedwith something else).

try shop4parts.co.uk, they might do them.

From memory from previous posts I would think it was £700 + labour from fiat:eek:

that happened to me the other week, suddenly power steering failed but luckily as in a quite place and on straight road. i just turned the car off and then started it back up and has been fine.

the same problem cost me £680 :bang: im sure the colum has tobe caliberated and only fiat can do it ........ but i could be wrong
