General Power Steering Failure in Punto 1.2

Hello All,

My car spec :=
Engine : 1.2 Litre 8V
Year : 2000

Problem:= power steering
- red light being displayed on the dash board.
- steering has become very very heavy to use ( almost impractical to use)

Actions taken till now :=
- tested for any loose connections / fuses
- opened AND cleaned all fuses in the fuse box (under the bonnet)
- cleaned all fuses under the steering wheel too

RESULT :=
-- No improvement.
-- No Power steering.
-- Red light is still on.
-- Very heavy steering.(still cannot use it for daily driving)

What should I do ?
- Should I take it to garage or attempt to fix it myself?
- Or sell it in its present state?

Please help.
